  1. On modern tyres we lose around 20% grip. Keep everything smooth and it is still safe to make progress. Biggest problem is visibility, especially if you wear glasses.

Pin lock insert for the visor is a godsend, but keep the visor closed and vents open if possible. Being an instructor I ride in all weathers and rain holds no fear ;) ice and snow on the otherhand.......

  2. Quite fancy one of them 1600gt BMW's and perhaps a cheeky Ss1000 for sunny Sundays :)

Thought I would contribute as there was a single UK winner and you never know ;)

Pretty sure just asking for 2 bikes after the draw because you did not win was not in the rules :D

I did not win anyway, got one lucky star on each line, nowt else :(

    Had to try :)

  3. MattB

I agree 100% about the teaching qualification.

I did a basic C&G 7303 qualification a couple of years ago and it has helped.

Most instructors don't seem interested in furthering their knowledge either, which is why the DSA are making noises about making CPD compulsory.

I gained a Diploma in Motorcycle Instruction in May. Cost a fair amount in lost wages, hotels and the course cost but well worth it - even if only being able to put DipMI after my name :D

  4. On a Green Provisional Licence all the categories that apply are on the reverse.

If you have a Full licence in any Category then the licence is Pink with the full categories on the reverse.

On the paperpart under Provisional Entitlements will be listed the categories that you will be termed 'a learner'

If you passed your bike test previously you should have a pink licence.

Are you sure that you actually posted off your pass Certificate to the DVLA?

  5. There is still provision on the test sheet for a serious mark to be added!!

Get the gist of it right and you will be fine. Listen carefully to the question: Tell Me or Show Me, How does the addition of a pillion affect the handling etc?

If you are unsure of anything tell the examiner that you would look it up in the handbook - dont guess! he/she might know that, say, the rear spring on your particular bike isnt adjusted by a c spanner etc ;)

  6. I was sure that transit style vans were only meant to do 60, I remember someone who went on a speed awareness course saying that..

My Brother has recently done a speed awareness course for the same thing :) He got done at 69mph on a dual in a Transit like van.

  7. 70mph for cars, car derived vans upto 2 tonnes and motorbikes.

60mph for Goods Vehicles under 7.5 tonnes - that includes non car derived vans (so white van man hogging lane 2 at 70mph+ is speeding)

60mph for buses, coaches and minibuses under 12 metres in length (I think)

60mph for cars, car derived vans and motorbikes towing a trailor.

50mph for Goods Vehicles over 7.5 tonnes.

I am 56 so forgive me if I have got any of the above wrong :)
