Pete Posted November 25, 2009 Share Posted November 25, 2009 Yes good luck with it fella, and do stick around - it'd be nice to hear about your journey.I've just been Googling about and found out that John o' Groats is so called because of a Dutchman named Jan de Groot who acquired funding for a ferry terminal to be built for ferries to go between the mainland and Orkney. This happened around 1496 during the reign of James IV as his father, James IIV acquired the islands from the Norwegians in 1472 as a replacement for a failed Dowry payment for his wife, Margaret of Denmark.
