Minor oil leak? Overfill?

I've just bought a second hand 2008 AJS DD125E-8 Regal Raptor MK1 custom cruiser. It had only done 608 miles and was in very good cosmetic condition. It had been serviced 10 months ago at 500 miles and hardly used since.

After riding it for two 10 mile journeys, I came to it this morning and there was a very small amount of very clean engine oil at the end of the side stand where it had dribbled down from somewhere.

After a 30-second check I couldn't find the source of the oil, mainly because it is so clear.

I checked the oil on the dipstick and it is very clean, if I am reading the dipstick correctly it looks very full, above the top mark.

Is this something to be very worried about?

Is it possible it was just overfilled at the last service and is now leaking out of the weakest oil seal (near the gear lever)?

I don't think it is a loose sump plug as the bike was standing for three days when I first got it having not been run for a while and it did not leak oil during this time.

Being a returning biker I've probably been a little harsh on the engine, gearbox and clutch over the last two days but nothing crazy.

Any advice appreciated.

Looking closer it seems to be coming from the left hand side of the engine (naturally) along the seam between the side cover (over the clutch / gearbox?) where it meets the engine.

Someone will be along to help you I'm sure,

My thoughts would be to nip up any bolt studs or allen on the gear box ,

Could be leaking out of gasket seal.

most likely chain oil, as it is flung off at both sprockets when running so catches in the sprocket cover and dribbles down..

Thanks for the replies.

Hmmm yeah possibly. It was standing for a few months and the chain shows some signs of light rust so it makes sense the previous owner might have lubricated the chain before selling it.

The drips are quite viscous though, more like engine oil than chain oil. Perhaps this is a different chain than I am used to (o-ring or something?)

The chain looks clean and quite dry visually but I'll give it a touch next time I am out and hopefully it will be coated in the same oil.

I would have imagined if it is chain oil there should be some oil residue on the rear sprocket. I'll have a look.

Bummer it's doesn't look like it is chain oil.

The oil on the chain is a totally different consistency :(

The oil in the sump matches this in colour and consistency. I'll keep an eye on it and if I have to, I'll take it into the dealership.

The guy that sold it you/did the oil change might of given the chain a quick going over with some of the engine oil that was left over. (fingers crossed)

Some people use used engine oil to lube their chains

Hey, if the engine oil appears to be Over the max mark i would recomend either draining some or doing a full change to get the correct amount in there!

To much oil would cause the pressure to rise to high and blow a seal (could explain why there is an oil leak).

Anywho, get the oil level down to within the stated range on the dip stick with the bike upright and see how the bike goes from there.

If your luck it will stop leaking but i suspect it may have ruptured a seal somewhere :|

let us know how it goes.

Best regards
