Enaver Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Hello everyone,Im 17 and i want to do the A2 restriccted licence test for my 18th birthday. However im extreamly confused about where i can do this and what it involves. Ive looked around the forum stickys and inless ive missed somthing im still lost. Ive looked around my loca motorbike centres and none of them do the A2 restriccted licence course, its either the CBT or the DAS. I have a few questions, if you could answer any or point out where im going wrong please say Is there certain centres which do the A2 restriccted licence?Does the A2 restriccted licence involve the same stuff as the DAS test?I live in Epsom in Surrey, if anyone coudl point out a centre where i could go and do this test it would be great.Im sorry if ive totally missed something and asked a obvious question, im just really confused. Thanks,Nic Quote

The only difference I know for sure is that if you are under 21 then you have to be restricted to 33bhp after passing all 3 elements (theory, mod 1 and mod 2) whereas if you do the DAS (and therefore are over 21) then you can ride anything after doing the 3 elements.I've only seen a couple of places that advertise a specific A2 course and I'm not really sure how they all handle it, but it might be worth ringing up some local bike school as what you are taught is the same whether you are going to end up with a restricted or full licence, the only difference is the end result.I also think that there is some rule to do with which bike you do the tests on, now don't quote me on this but I believe that if you are doing the DAS then you have to do your tests on something larger than a 125, but I might be talking out of my ass here. Susieque Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Hi Nic It can be very confusing!!! Take a look at this thread - http://www.themotorbikeforum.co.uk/view ... 47&t=31635I think the A2 test you're referring to is the one that Cobbz calls the 125 route. I left 21 years of age a long time ago so didn't need to know about this! But as far as I know, the basic difference between A2 & full DAS is that when you're under 21 you can only take your test on a 125cc bike and have to be restricted to 33bhp for 2 years. I'm pretty certain that the test itself is the same for both restricted A2 and DAS.Hope I'm not giving you bum info here! Quote
Susieque Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Lol both posted together!! Well that's 2 of us saying similar things so must be on the right lines!EDIT: As far as training schools are concerned I wouldn't think you need to go to a school that specifically does A2 tests - I would've thought any training school offers both DAS and A2. Enaver Posted September 8, 2010 Author Posted September 8, 2010 Thank you both for your replies, has made it alot clearer to me Thank you for that link, looking through it now for details that i need.If i think i am capable enough would i just book myself in for a Mod 1 then a Mod 2? (After ringing up and making sure they do the A2 restriccted licence) Quote
Susieque Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 You'd need some training before the test I should imagine, so that they can teach you how to pass your test - what examiners pick up on etc.Ring a local centre, tell them how old you are & that you wnt to take your restricted test & they will advise you on your best course of action. Enaver Posted September 8, 2010 Author Posted September 8, 2010 Ah okay that makes sense actually. Ill contact some places tomorrow and see if they do it or not. Thanks again! Quote
cypek Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 The only difference between DAS and A2 is bike you do it on. DAS - bike need to be over 46bhp and you must be accompanied by instructor all the time. For restricted license you do it on a 125 and you can train with school or on your own bike. You can do it in any test centre and probably you can use any school for it as all of them have 125cc bikes. You can also buy a 125, get some experience on it and book/ pass tests on your own Quote
Enaver Posted September 8, 2010 Author Posted September 8, 2010 Okay, i think i understand it, i need to ask one more question. See on this site where it says book now...http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg ... 86302.htmlWhen selecting bike, would i be doing Big Bike Mod 1/2?Thanks! Quote
BBTBB Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Standard Bike Mod 1 then 2. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Ingah Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 For you and your circumstances you must take the tests (i.e. Mod 1 and Mod 2) on a 125 capable of 62mph or more (in theory, not in practise - i.e. a "learner bike")To quote the DVLA:"* a standard motorcycle licence (A), is obtained if the practical test is taken on a bike of over 120 cc but not more than 125 cc and capable of at least 100 kilometres per hour (km/h per hour)..After passing the standard motorcycle practical test, you will be restricted for two years to riding a bike of up to 25 kW and a power/weight ratio not exceeding 0.16 kW/kg. After this you may ride any size of bike.Note: The BMW C1 motorcycle is not a suitable machine for a practical test." 25kW = about 33.5BHP.The power to weight ratio specified is to prevent people strapping a 25kW engine to something weighing little more than a bicycle to go insanely fast on what we all call the "restricted" (yet still "full") license. You can take the test on a 75-120cc bike BUT if you do you won't be given a proper license, you'll get an A1 type instead, which for all intents and purposes is useless to anyone that ever wants to ride a bigger bikes as an A1 license won't let you do that!
