to cut a long story short...

I was out riding today. The road was really bumpy and the bike suddenly seemed to go into neutral (it didnt sound too healthy either). I took the engine sprocket cover off because i thought the chain may have somehow become detached.

To my surprise it wasnt but (and heres where im getting into the realms of dont know what Im talking about...), it looks as though the engine sprocket nut and washer were missing. When I put the bike into gear the rod thing that attaches the sprocket to the engine was spinning independently but the sprocket wasnt turning. I found something attached to the crap inside the cover which is bent all to hell. I took photos of the sprocket and washer (i think its a washer).

Is this an easy fix job? or will it need an engineer to fix it?

Ive left it by the side of the road in the middle of nowhere and took a bus home so ill have to go back out and try to find it next week once i get the bits.

any help much appreciated.

Thanks

The sprocket itself should have a keyway in it, this locates on a tenon on the shaft. (your spinning bit)

Think peg and hole, this makes the sprocket turn rather than spinning the shaft.

So, you should be able to push the sprocket back onto the shaft. Then you will need the lock washer (first pic) and a new nut for the shaft. Washer on first, then nut, very tight indeed. The washer, should will have some sort of mechanism on it to stop the nut from undoing. Which is what has happened to you.

All depends on the sytem employed by your bike, but it looks like you bend a piece of the washer into a cavity, or against a flat on the nut. I don't know if youtube would be any help to you on this, but worth a shot.

ok, looks simple enough. i thought there may have been damage to the shaft/sprocket as it had been spinning separately.

thanks v much

Well, you won't know yet, hopefully it came away from the spindle and span on the end, you will soon see.

Look at the output shaft, is it damaged? are the splines on the sprocket damaged. I bet your chain and rear sprocket need replacing too? More pix please???

im waiting for replacement parts to come (washer etc). As soon as I get them Im off to find my bike and if the damage is worse than simple, im getting it taken into the garage and let them do it. I should be able to ride it in though i think (hope/pray) even if the output shaft is damaged.

I dont see why the chain would need replacing though unless the front sprocket needs changing? I only rode it 500ms, downhill and it was in neutral most of that time.

Ill see tinight I suppose.

cheers again for replies! :)

Good luck with it. But if you don't have a locking nut, or nut you can fasten on in the mean time DONT ride it, as the sprocket will come off the spindle, and could damage a lot of bits inside. For example if it slides onto the thread of the lockiung nut, and your still moving forwards (even in neutral) the sprocket will spin, and will rip up the locking nut's thread. Meaning you'll need to have a new spindle bought and fitted (not a cheap job). How close is the garage? I'd consider pushing it there, making sure every so often that the sprocket is still in place. I can't see why the chain would need replacing, if you cruised 500meters to a stop. The chains a hard b*stard, and a bit of rubbing on the frame doesn't to it any harm. (This is comming from the person that spent over 2 days filing down a link on a chain.)

Oh yes.

At least I gained a little muscle from all the labour.

Looking at the state of that sprocket I suspect the rear sprocket is bad as well. If you try to pull the chain backwards off the rear sprocket, how much does it move? Any more than 3mm and you need a new chain    Can you post more pix???

ive got the washer and nut (he took the lot off the same engine he had lying around) and tomorrow morning im going to go and get the bike. I intend to ride it to the bike shop (about 20 kms away) and get him to check it over. I dont have much choice in the matter really cos its parked up in the middle of a mountain pass (i hope).

The sprocket is only 6 months old (most of that is over winter) as i just had the chain and sprockets replaced. I think its just a bad picture, the sprocket looked fine when i opened the cover. Thw washer was fudged though.

BUUUUT, Ill heed your advice about stopping and checking it though as i dont have the means to tighten the nut on as well as I would like to without an electric socket set.

fingers crossed...

I wouldnt ride it without a locking nut on! your asking for trouble there lol!!

out of curiosity what bike is it? as i saw your thread about offroading and judging by your avatar pic it looks like a cruiser type....

Do you have a socket or spanner to fit the nut?

If so, after tightening it as much as you can, put the bike into gear, put spanner/socket on the nut, stand on the rear brake pedal and the tighten the nut up even more.

If you don't hava a spanner / socket to fit, go get one

I'd ride slowely and stop and check the tightness after a few Kms, you'll be able to see if it's come loose at all and then decide if you need to stop again before getting to the garage with it

Good luck :thumb:

I put the nut on myself with a wrench and then rode it to the bike shop. I kept stopping every 2 kms or so but it was fine. The bloke in the garage put the nut on tighter/properly with an electric socket set so its all fixed now. Everything else was fine (ie chain/sprockets etc.).

Horseynat...

The bike is a Hyosung comet (the blue one). I had the cruiser too but sold it a few months back.

cheers everyone for tips and advice

I've just ordered a torque wrench so I can fit my new chain and sprocket set, a cheap one off ebay at about £20, hope it doesn't bend while Im fitting the new sprocket lmao.

BTW, has anyone heard of a brand named Sealey?
