shauneyboy Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 hi guys can anyone advise me on what is the best way to degrease a chain and with what and what is the best oil to use afterwards cheersshaun Quote
sparkeh9 Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 I use degreaser to get the gunk off (or WD40 if I haven't got any degreaser), hose it down with water, then spray on the new chain lube as I turn the wheel slowly (on centre stand of course), then wipe off the excess.Might not be the best or right way to do it, but it's always worked for me Quote
Carlos Von Brum Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 You might consider a scottoiler - excellent bit of kit.Kerosene works a frickin treat - £5 for 5l in Asda. Grab a plant spray gun - thing and spray it all over the chain and give it a scrubbin'. I can't recomend it enough. Then slosh any old engine oil on it. Bish bosh bash job done, me china.Stay the hell away from Holts chain lube- it has the consistency of swarfega. WD40 is a bad idea too IMHO. CvB Quote
Danny-B- Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 Aye apparently WD40 is bad for the O rings (or X rings) as it perishes them I used parafin on my chain and the crud almost just fell off! just used a paint brush and a dab of parafin every now and again untill it was squeeky clean. Then relubed it with the spray oil stuff. sparkeh9 Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 I just use WD40 for its penetrant properties, crud comes off fairly easily Gonna get some paraffin and give that a go. I didn't know you could buy kerosene from ASDA, I think of it as jet fuel Quote

For the black plastic stuff, i spray some WD40 on a rag then wipe it over the pastic Quote
