...but im not sure anyone checks the other thread as it hasnt been posted on since July.

1st q.

Is there much advantage to taking your chain off when you clean it or is it not really necessary?

"2nd question,

Just assuming you lived somewhere where it isnt possible to buy chain cleaner or parafin or chain lube or any other product, what would you do to clean your chain.

My current method is washing it with soap and hot water, rinsing it and then applying engine oil. The alternative method seems to be to take it to a garage and they cake it with grease.

Im not too convinced either of these two methods are a great way to ensure longevity or performance from my chain.

Any practical suggestions greatly appreciated and the beers in the post.

I've never taken a chain off to clean it!

what you're doing sounds fine if you can't

If you must, use a detergent with water or a rag soaked in petrol. Clean chain thoroughly, dry it and lube with heavy oil. Do not use bleach or grease on your chain.

No need to remove chain to clean it and don,t do it with engine running. Good luck.

Don't even use soap! It's full of salt

Get on ebay or amazon and order a few tins of chain cleaner its delivered to your door so you don't have to go to shops for it

Cheers for replies.

Its impossible for me even to get anything from amazon. Ill just stick to the car/jet wash place and some elbow grease for now then... :)
