Remy Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 Is there any way of polishing them out or at least reducing the scratches? My exhaust and wing mirror have a few 'scuffs' from where the bike has been dropped, just wondering if there is any product that can help minimise the damage. Quote
megawatt Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 I can polish stainless for you, depending on depth of scratches though? Got any pix. Dunno about chrome though, because it's a mirror finish, it does take a lot of very fine polishing!!! Can you post clear pix of the damage? Quote
Remy Posted January 12, 2012 Author Posted January 12, 2012 I'll take some pics Alan, might be a bit tricky though as you are the other side of the country from me! Quote
mealexme Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 the stuff that sounds like anusol. can't remember the name of it and never used it but it should work.on the chrome, protect it with acf50 if the scratches are through to the metal because it will rust like hell otherwise! Quote
TC Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 I'll take some pics Alan, might be a bit tricky though as you are the other side of the country from me! Good excuse for a Challenge road trip Gill Quote
megawatt Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 I can do something if it's stainless and you can always post it? Quote
megawatt Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 Spotted this on the bay???150732823800I could make a stainless shield for it? Quote
Bonniebird Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 the stuff that sounds like anusol. can't remember the name of it and never used it but it should work for all the good it does, you might as well stick it up your.........Autosol?? Quote
Remy Posted January 12, 2012 Author Posted January 12, 2012 Lol got that and it just makes the rest of it shiny Spotted this on the bay???150732823800I could make a stainless shield for it? Blimey that was a find, Gladii stuff seems quite rare (like the bike!). Thanks for the offer Alan but I'm trying to keep costs down, I was just wondering if there was something I could do myself but I guess polishing scratches is quite a skill and I wouldn't want to make it worse! megawatt Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 If it's just the shiney cover, it may be stainless, a pic could confirm. I have stainless polishing eqpt. Not much to post? If it is chrome, I would replace with a stainless cover or buy a new one? Quote

Remy Posted January 13, 2012 Author Posted January 13, 2012 Some pics for you Alan - I assume the wing mirror is not fixable!http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/greydales/Motorbikes/Wingmirror.jpghttp://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/greydales/Motorbikes/Exhuast2.jpghttp://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/greydales/Motorbikes/Exhaust.jpg Quote
megawatt Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Mirror looks like chrome, but if that zorst cover is stainless or alluminium and I think it is one or the other, I have high speed polishing eqpt that will get rid of all but the deepest scratches. Chromed mild steel is not usually recoverable as the chrome is very thin. Popthe zorst cover in the post and I'll have it back to you in a week? Quote
Remy Posted January 13, 2012 Author Posted January 13, 2012 Ok thanks, I'll let you know when I've got it sorted! Quote
Colin the Bear Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Electric toothbrush and autosol. A dremel with a polishing mop and some rouge. Quote

megawatt Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 (edited) Just taken receipt of Gills exhaust cover. It is stainless and I should be able to get rid of most of the scratches . Here's what I will be using;http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/IMAG0276-1.jpghttp://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/IMAG0275-1.jpgIt's a system called Roloc by 3M. You fit what feel like scouring pads to an adaptor that fits onto an angle grinder. I have some 50mm pads that fit to a drill adaptor that spins at 3000RPM. These spin at about 14000 RPM and are 75mm diameter, so you tend to get a better finish. I also use a Dremel on the deeper scratches. Will keep you posted. Edited February 2, 2012 by megawatt Quote
Tango Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Hmmmm.....scouring pads.......you're a braver man than I Gunga Din...... Quote
megawatt Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Good one Bob I polished this weld with one;before;http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/IMAG0217-1.jpgafter;http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/IMAG0216.jpgThe marks you can see are where the seal weld wasn't deep enough. Would have had to add more weld, but the trackday guy wasn't bothered with a perfect finish? Quote
Tango Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Nice job Alan.......was just yanking yer chain anyway...... Quote
megawatt Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Was fairly quiet at work overnight , so I managed a bit of polishing:http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/IMAG0277-1.jpghttp://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/IMAG0281.jpgGot a bit more to do, then final polish with Autosol and a buff up, then back to Gills. megawatt Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 Finished, a bit more Solvol Autosol, a quick polish and done. will be in the post tomorrow Gillhttp://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/IMAG0310-1.jpghttp://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/IMAG0309-1.jpghttp://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/IMAG0308-1.jpg Quote
Tango Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 Hey....nice job Alan.....it's come up really good..... Quote
megawatt Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 Yeah , stainless is usually recoverable, unlike chrome. But it is quite soft, unlike chrome, and scratches easily. Needs regular polishing. Quote
