IAM/Rospa??

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be signing up for an advanced test in the near future. Question is, is there a benefit with going to one organisation or another?

I am currently in the mind set of using IAM for training, test and membership. However, I do need to do a bit more study on both of them though, but would appreciate any ones thoughts on the subject.

What makes you think you need an advanced test, not knocking it, just curious?

Have you looked at the police Bikesafe scheme? You could do a day and see waht they say. The other alternative is the DSA backed Enhanced Rider Scheme.

Hi Matt,

partly because I want to. I already know that I am already a confident and safe rider. Just need a challenge this summer ;)

And the other part...

To ride for SERV you need to have a full motorcycle licence (Category A), and two years riding experience and holding advanced qualification, either IAM / ROSPA. If you are not an advanced rider you will need to enroll on a scheme before you join us and undertake to pass your test within 12 months.

;)

this time last year it was this...

I went for IAMs as there was an acitve group nearby and you only have to take the test once whereas with ROSPA you have to renew, I think every 3 years. There was also no active ROSPA group nearby. That said the guy who takes me out is both IAMs and ROSPA in the car and on the bike so I'm probably getting training that would pass either.

I've found it very worthwhile, gives me the tools to make me feel safer and get round the twisties faster. Not sure where you live but our IAMs does a block course over the summer which might suit you. I'm taking it slowly as only passed my test last summer so I need more time to get the hang of each new thing.

Thanks for that. I have signed up to iam already. Local group is only 14 miles away. Been a week, and still waiting for the paper work :)

Thanks.

The test is a 90 minute ride on a mixture of roads from single track to dual carriageways with an ex police motorcyclist following behind you. It's all about positioning yourself in the safest position, where you get the best view ahead and riding progressively. It's been invaluable to me as I was so nervous after I passed my test as I felt like I didn't know where to be on the road, how to assess what speed to approach a bend, overtake safely, filter etc and now I do. Although lots still to learn and I don't have the years of experience of most people but I do have the basis to continue improving from.

I've booked onto the Performance Plus at Cadwell in Sept so that's my next challenge :D

Passed mine last Monday too :)

3 observed rides, a mock mock test.. and a mock test.

Enjoyed the experience, the only downside, I blew my bike up 3 weeks before the test date.

Still, all good in the end :)
