stewslash Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 well i took my theory last week and passed that 50/50 on the questions and 59/75 for hazard perception , just got back from my mod 1 today passed with two faults on the slalom / figure of eight so now comes the time for me to book my mod 2, got a date for next month!question 1 should i ride over or go round speed bumps?question 2 is the road always a 20mph limit if there are speed bumps on it? , i say this because around St. helens were my closest test centre is they seem to have speed bumps everywhere and i am not familiar with the area at allso my mod 1 , well i was nervous as hell, i thought my test was at 815 it turns out it was 845 so that was a extra half a hour in some baking hot little room sweating my t*ts offgets called out side to the bike right by the pad, some guy was just finishing his test on there, so he pulls out and parks up, about 10 seconds later his examiner walked out behind himmy examiner nods me to enter the pad, just as i go to pull off (after doing my lifesavers of course) the other examiner walks across my path causing my to stop (i was still at least 10ft away fro him) i continue on to the pad done my test and thankfully passed it but when i get into the office for my examiner to write out my pass certificate , he starts asking why i went to move off and telling me off like a kid in front of 2 other instructors with their students, really talking to me like i was stupid, it took all i had not to tell him to stick mod 1 up his ass(i hope he aint reading this), so what would of been a really great day turns out to be just a great day!i get where he was coming from but still i was at least 10 foot from the other examiner when i halted my entrance onto the pad, and he did nod me to enter so i just assumed the the guy would of stayed where he was instead of walking across my path, i guess my nerves got the better of me, normally i wouldn't of moved off at all the someone by me lesson learnt and mod 1 passed Quote

No hard and fast rule, you can go round them but of course that depends on what traffic, pedestrians, parked cars, cats etc are also doing at the time, you can ride around if it is safe to do so, if it is not, go over them.2. No. Quote
Badger08 Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 1. Over if you believe there is a potential hazard by going around them, be sure to check for pedestarians and the line in the centre of the road (Solid or Dashed)2. No not always 20 but the examiner will be looking for your checks if you do go around the speed bumps. A student who took his test before mine failed for going 30mph over the speed bump.Congrats on MOD1 and the theory! Quote
Nell Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 1) As others have said round if clear, (either on the inside or outside is fine) or over if not. Use common sense and your own judgement, etc.2) No, not always. Keep a lookout for speed limit signs. Carlisle where I did my test is a swine for keep swapping between 20mph and 30mph from one sidestreet to the next, so be careful you don't get caught out. I'd always advocate going to a place to familarise myself with the area, but obviously it's up to yourself. Quote
stewslash Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 thanks for the replies, i think i will go around there in the car and scope out the local roads! Quote
Englishman Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 I did my Mod 2 in St Helens. I had Annette as my examiner. If you go right, right out of the test centre, to the traffic lights. Go straight on up that little hill. Turn left and she then had me do the independent ride portion, following signs to the M62. Up a dual carriageway and through the town. Watch out for one left turn onto a dual, as the left hand lane is a bus lane from 7am-7pm. There's a 20mph signed section up there somewhere, but I didn't see the end-of restriction sign, so just went back to 30 once there were no speed bumps any more. Annette is keen on following distance, so observe the 2 sec rule at all times - including when pulling away from lights in traffic - I got a minor for catching the car in front when we all pulled off in a line. One roundabout she said to "take the second exit, but the first exit is very close to it" - I indicated before the roundabout and took the second exit, gaining myself a minor in the process, but it could judt have easily been classed as a driving error and failed me right there. I thought I had blown it at that point and relaxed the rest of the test.On the Mod 2, traffic signs tell you everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, you need to know when out riding your test. Look for them all the timeAnyway, original question - yes, go over speed bumps gently and in control of the bike. What they don't want to see is you swerving to go through the gaps and possibly putting yourself in danger of on-coming traffic. Plus, drivers coming towards you might shit a little bit when a bike is too close to their lane. The last thing you want to do on your test is to make another road user have to react to your presence, such as you pulling into a gap that oncoming cars think is too small, and braking accordingly. On the plus side, my Mod 2 was a very ragged ride (detailed in the Mod 2 experiences section) but I passed with 6 minors. Show you're in control and that you take riding a motorbike seriously, and you'll have no problems. All the best, and practice the routes if you can. I'd never been that way up through those first lights before the Mod 2, so it was all brand new to me despite riding that area for 4 solid days beforehand. Quote
littlecat Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 on the speed bump question, my instructor was a stickler for going around them, using your judgement to decide whether to go outside or inside Quote
Daytona Paul Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 I'm with the go around the speed humps either L or r dependant on traffic. Should there be an obstruction on the left and an on coming vehicle then if it is safe go over. It is all Awareness and Planning Quote
mealexme Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 its fine to go round or over them. I sense you are being like me when I did my test and are making sure you are doing everything 100%. The examinors are more relaxed about it than you may think. As long as you do everything lawfuly and safely they will not fail you. ie it doesnt matter if the examinor tells you to turn right at a roundabout and you find yourself in the left hand lane. Stick your left hand indicator on and go left, you may frustrate the examinor slightly at the time but they will probably congratulate you on how you handled it afterwards. A bit of advice is, as others have said, try and forward plan as much as you can. Look at the road signs, keep an eye on your speed (but dont worry too much if you go a couple of mph over, they shouldnt fail you for that, and let us know how you get on. If you have any more questions, dont be afraid to ask.We dont bite Not all of us bite! Quote

Absolutely brilliant advice.I took my MOD 2 yesterday and all of the above is bang on.I indicated to come off a roundabout at the first exit, even though I should have taken the second, I even had a late decision moment when I took the first exit and basically gave a little wobble and then a jerk of the handlebars. That was my one and only minor (for the bars, not for the wrong exit) The examiner even told me he knew why I did it at the debrief and he had no problems with me deliberately not going the way as signposted (It was on the independent ride)As to the speed, I saw all the signs ok, knew which speed I should be going but for some reason I could just not manage it? 40 limit, look down, 37, nudge throttle, 40 lovely, check mirrors, brilliant, glance down, 36. WTF, back up to 40, carry on, look down, 37!!, back up to 40, look down, 42, really?? back down to 40, glance down, 37. AAAAAARGGGH. This happened pretty much all test for all speeds. No idea why it happened other than nerves, I had sticking at speeds no issues all the way there and all the way back He did not even mention it.They know you are nervous, and they do make allowances for it.
