Throttled Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 The bolts on my mirror extenders have rusted such that I cannot get them tight any more. They look like thishttp://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTuYjQgcYEq22C5lFrXnPYV1yNlzgVdU07U3bvE5hsPLM5isWE1nAl8yIbKWhat size are the bolts? A search on line does not get an answer. Thanks Quote
megawatt Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 Look like M8. Are they both right hand thread? Got some stainless if you measure the length, under the Allen head? Quote
Throttled Posted November 12, 2012 Author Posted November 12, 2012 I looked at all the bolts on Ebay, so i would look for M8 x whatever the thread length is?(They are both turn clockwise to tighten.) Quote
megawatt Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 Probably got a couple somewhere? The bolt in the piccy looks a tad short. What is the max length you can fit in? Quote
Throttled Posted November 12, 2012 Author Posted November 12, 2012 They are 25mm long and I used a 8mm allen key, so is that right I need M8x25 bolts? Quote
Throttled Posted November 12, 2012 Author Posted November 12, 2012 They are 25mm long and I used a 8mm allen key, so is that right I need M8x25 bolts? This is not easy, according to this chart I foundhttp://www.numberfactory.com/nf%20metri ... 0bolts.htmif I used an 8mm allen (hex) head then it was a M12 bolt Quote
megawatt Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 An M8 Allen bolt has a 8mm thread, 1.25 pitch. Takes a 6mm Allen key to tighten it up. PM yer addy and I'll stick two in the post tomorrow. Stainless OK? Quote
megawatt Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 Reply sent. Can you measure the diam of the thread, the allen head and the A/F of the hexagon drive (Allen key)? Quote
Throttled Posted November 12, 2012 Author Posted November 12, 2012 The thread is 8mm, the head diameter is 15mm and I don't know what the A/F is Quote
Throttled Posted November 12, 2012 Author Posted November 12, 2012 The offending bolt http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8058/8179869287_f95cfd499b_c.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8487/8179888539_701fccda4f_c.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8067/8179885147_99b8b5e79b_c.jpg Quote
megawatt Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 There is a very slim chance that it has a M10 fine thread mate, with a 8mm Allen head. If it is M8 thread and 8mm Allen head, it's the first one I've ever seen !!! will check some M8s and M10s tomorrow. Quote
Stu Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 looks M10 to me! I have seen M10's with 8mm allen key before i have some on my bike Quote
Chrissb6 Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 Hi, l would say it was a 8mm thread, can l suggest you clean up the female tread on the lever first what ever size thread it is with a plug tap. With a steel bolt going into a alloy thread it could be just a case of the tread getting oxidised and thus becoming tight. Hope this helps. Quote
megawatt Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 Seen loads of M10, 8mm allen key bolts Stu. Never seen a M8, 8mm allen key bolt Quote
Mrbarry Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 I have m10x1, m10x1.25 and m10x1.5 SS Cap heads in the garage if you need a couple. Can lend you a tap to suit as long as it comes back too. Quote
Throttled Posted November 13, 2012 Author Posted November 13, 2012 I have given both bits a damn good clean with a rag and WD40 and used locknut and they stayed put today Quote
Mrbarry Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 We if the locknut was an off the shelf item chances are its metric standard not fine. Quote
Throttled Posted November 13, 2012 Author Posted November 13, 2012 Sorry, by lock nut I meant this stuffhttp://www.onlinebearings.co.uk/images/P/loctite_243_lg.jpg Quote
Mrbarry Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Oh lol, I did think it an odd idea to use a lock but but all the same.... HahahaYeah that will stop them coming loose!! Quote
