Afternoon,

Can someone guide me through cleaning my brakes? I'm not sure how often to clean them but i havn't done it in nearly 3 months not sure if that's bad or not? Im just paranoid something could go wrong with them if they're not regularly cleaned. I have tools, i have brakes cleaner i have most other spirits i could possibly need, what i don't have is the knowledge =D

Bike shops should run a "Basic maintenance" course to show new riders how to clean chains properly aswell as brakes tighten chain check electrics stuff like that ^^

squirt them with water when you clean it job done!

once a year pop the caliper off and clean up with brake cleaner and a toothbrush if you really want or just wait till the pads needs replacing

Ah sweet =) So brakes won't just stop working if i don't take calipers off and scrub away? I've jsut been hosing them when i do the rest of the bike ^^

depends how cheap the bike is  but as a general rule they dont need removing and cleaning all the time

If you do decide at some point to clean the calipers make sure you've got some Red Rubber Grease to lubricate the pistons before you push them back in after cleaning...... 8-)

Look up Oval Motorcycle Centre, they do basic maintenance course evenings which I found absolutely brilliant (be warned, my evening turned into a 1:30 finish although central London traffic is much nicer at that time than rush hour!) and they're always there to take your bike to do the work on.

Youtube, Delboys garage and go to "how to clean your brake callipers" (or something along the line of), Nice easy and helpful information which is simple to follow and do :thumb:

ps, I've just changed my fork oil so did this while it was all unbolted  I was changing the brake fluid anyway so seemed to be the way to go :thumb: :salute:

Every 3 months? Wow, I only ever do mine when I change the pads!
