Magnetic tape.

I thought it would be good to put a loop of it round my new oil filter to catch any microscopic metal particles that get left in the oil and circulated round the engine. Since I forgot to buy a magnetic sump plug for my bike, I thought this would be a good alternative.

Nice idea but not sure of that stuff has enough magnetism to work through the filter and keep the particles captive.

Nice idea, I like it! Should work no problem - the oil is only the other side of the filter casing. :-)

Hi nice idea but the reason a magnet is put at the bottom of the sump is to catch the larger particles that might break off from the engine- gearbox internals. The engine sump is not pressurised so in theory any heavy objects should sink to the bottom of the sump and catch the magnet. Whereas the oil filter is pressurised, that magnetic tape will be magnetic material bonded onto a tape can you be sure that the bonding agent will stay intact under high engine temperature and pressure? If it starts to break up it could cause you all sorts of problems.

If larger particles broke off I think a magnet on my oil filter would be the least of my problems.

I'm talk about the grey "silt" you get on a magnet after a 5k oil change on an engine with more than a few k on the clock.

That's a really good idea... Can't believe I haven't heard of it before
