Hi peeps.

Got my storm in bits, one advantage of the storm layout is I have the chain completely off without spitting it.

I want to clean it properly, because it's pretty manky, but not worn.

I have heard of parrafin to clean it, but haven't got any, I have turpentine? I don;'t think turps will work in thick grease though, is paraffin a different thing (apart from being purple) if it will do it I will go and get some.

Don't see any reason why not. Any spirit will need a bit of scrubbing to get the gunk off. Use a soft tooth brush and give it a good rinse before putting it back in the bath room.

Thanks guys, I have been told turps is a no go, so I will pop and get some paraffin in the morning.

Is it worth using some thinner oil first after cleaning to get into the o rings before chain lube or wax?

No mate. Clean with paraffin and dry finish with brake cleaner onto a terry towel and onto the chain until it's clean and bone dry. If you can warm the chain, do so gently and then apply chain lube. Let it set and then spin off and clean any excess in the morning after.

Where do you buy parafin from these days??

When I was a kid my mum's village shop used to sell parafin but then sales dropped off and I remember helping my grandad remove the huge steel parafin tank and cut it up for scrap...

No idea where to buy it from these days!!

I feel lazy now...

I just scrub mine witha brush and use some chain cleaner, let it dry a bit and lube it up :P

B&Q etc do Paraffin and often you find it on Petrol station forecourts next to the BBQ coals etc. Usually in 2.5l containers that have the handle on top.

Paraffin is easily obtainable in Home base or B&Q. It's sold under the "parazene" brand or at a pinch you can use lamp oil which works just as well.

Use red diesel. Or heating oil. Both are way cheaper than paraffin.
