newboy Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 Hi all I know it's a hard one, but has anyone else here had or have experience on this noise? Hopefully someone with a good mechanical brain and ear can give us idea. Also the noise seems to go with higher revs. Please see the link & Thanks for watching. "> Quote
Tango Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 Hmmm.....it's a bit hard to tell from listening to the noise on a Youtube vid......but it sounds like Big End knocking to me......but I can't say for sure..... I take it that the engine oil level is OK? Quote
newboy Posted April 13, 2014 Author Posted April 13, 2014 Hmmm.....it's a bit hard to tell from listening to the noise on a Youtube vid......but it sounds like Big End knocking to me......but I can't say for sure..... I take it that the engine oil level is OK? Yeah oil is fine. I noticed the noise about half a mile from home when idling at lights. Is that a big costly job? Hope it's something else if so (fingers crossed)...Thanks Tango. Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 sounds like the time for major engine work or replacement engine,i dont know the bike is it 4 stroke or 2 stroke like tango says it sounds like big end to me as well and its not going as revs increase its just balancing out a bit but in the end it will go bang and appear through the casing Quote
Guest Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Yepp id say thats the Big end...Sorry fella... Quote
Zipster Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Sounds big endish - maybe time for a new engine or just kill it and trade up! Quote
DreamytimeEscorts Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 Sounds like a big end to me. The hardest part is getting the engine out and back in again. It'll be cheaper to get it repaired than buy a new engine. Quote
9bhp Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 Hmmm sounds nasty but might be worth checking your rollers first Quote
newboy Posted April 19, 2014 Author Posted April 19, 2014 Please see updated Video and feel free to comment thanks... Quote
DreamytimeEscorts Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Take it to bits and see if anything looks broken! Quote
Zipster Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Take it to a bike shop and get their take on it. Quote
newboy Posted April 21, 2014 Author Posted April 21, 2014 Thanks...I should've mentioned I'm low on funds at present so no chance of getting it to the garage just yet.I got all but one of the cover bolts off except the clutch nut, as I didn't have a socket to fit...Grrr!!!I was gonna take the variator off and run the engine to see if the noise was still there (Determining if it was big end trouble)The sound seems to come more from that end rather than the clutch end...Could be wrong though. Zipster Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 A good shop won't take money from you for a diagnosis and you can always get a second or third opinion from others before you decide to pay out your hard earned savings. At least you'll know what it is, how much it's likely to cost and how long it'll take to fix! What's to lose? Quote
newboy Posted April 22, 2014 Author Posted April 22, 2014 If I was 100% sure I could ride around a few garages without it blowing up I suppose that's the best Idea...Thanks Zipster.Unfortunately I'm not so I'll wait till I get the casing off, and If I can't fix it, then I'll have to get someone out when the money comes in. eastanglianbiker Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 if you put your location in your profile details there might be a local member who can help id the noise for you and guide you along to repairing the bike but without anyone knowing where you are we cant recomend any good or worse still bad garages Quote
newboy Posted April 26, 2014 Author Posted April 26, 2014 Thanks to all the helpers I've fixed it now. I took all the parts out, cleaned them and put it all back together. I did notice the the variator nut came off too easily, so that might have been the culprit.Though I will have to get the clutch and variator nuts off again to superglue them, as I didn't do that in case they had to come off again, Dohhh!!!I found an absolutely fantastic site for scooters here: http://scootergrisen.dk/scooterhjemmeside/index.php It's foreign but you can use the translate function.Below is a new edited link to my actions that others may find handy to come across."Piaggio Xevo noisy engine or CVT?""> One last thought...Can you use ptfe tape that plumbers use to stop the nuts backing off? RegardsPaul Quote
DreamytimeEscorts Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Don't use superglue, put some blue thread-lock on it. Quote
newboy Posted April 26, 2014 Author Posted April 26, 2014 Dodged a bullet there. I thought it was super glue!...Thanks... Quote
Bogof Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 One last thought...Can you use ptfe tape that plumbers use to stop the nuts backing off? You can, but it won't work in that way. It's purpose is to seal against leaks, not to inhibit movement (ptfe is (or was) the 2nd most slippery substance known to man) Quote
newboy Posted April 27, 2014 Author Posted April 27, 2014 Hahaha!...Thanks bogof. Didn't know that.I was looking at new nuts on ebay, £4 each! Just a thought...I wonder if 2 x 19mm 30p nyloc nuts would do the same job? Quote
