I've recently bought a ER6F which had a very ugly stock exhaust, so i've bought a beowulf silencer, and installed it straight away at a highly recommended garage, now i only did 10mile's on the stock exhaust so i'm not sure if it's normal, but now and again and not very often, i believe i can hear the silencer backfiring? is this a massive problem? long term effect's? noticed on a google search quite a few people have this problem with beowulf but haven't had any engine issues.

It does this when unburnt fuel is mixed with fresh air in the exhaust

It can be normal if you have a secondary air system that feeds air in to the exhaust to weaken the mixture to meet euro 6 emissions

If you don't have that system then you have an exhaust leak

No harm will be done though

All is well then, noticed after going to Squires through motorway tunnels, not sure if i have a secondary, will check later on.

Thank's for the hasty reply.

How can you say the ER exhaust is ugly, If its the true ER pipe, you can't even see it, unless you go down on your hands & knees

Personal preference, look's like a old steel mill whisle to me! and i woulden't go that far saying you can't see it

there's a well documented issue with the old er6 exhaust where the welds crack. Basically they're a bit shit. if, after you put your beowulf can on, you still experience this - have a look at replacing the down pipes with some stainless ones, which will last a damn sight longer.

Mine chatters at normal revs. I've heard all sorts of explinations for it (worn valve seats, blowing, dodgy header gasket etc)- mostly people say it's remedied when they swap out the cheapo kwak pipes.

there's another chap who welded a small piece of metal to the inside of the exhaust which removed the chattering.

When we meet up kling, first pints on me.

Diden't realize it was just the downpipe, this is one reason i replaced it instantly (+ not a fan of the look) as i thought it was also the can itself that caused that issue.

if that's the case i won't do anything yet as the parts are out of my budget at the moment... (spent £600 on gear..... £180 on can) on top of finance....

So if that's what is happening i'll live with it for now.

One thing i've learned about aftermarket exhausts you can't really hear what's happening as good as been behind or at side, because of the helmet, still sound's amazing though!

No worries. This is a result of 12 months of minor irritations with the er6! On the whole it's a good bike, just a little build quality lets it down - all easily remedied with a little effort. It's why you see so many er6 with aftermarket slip on cans.

Seem's to be alot worse without the baffle, i kinda like it though, 32mph is constant poping, as long as no damage will be done it's staying, we should meet up king! ;D 8-)

Does it on both my bikes .. I like it , as someone said just unburnt fuel , won't do no harm.

Backfire happens all the time... you just don't hear it because of the baffles... which are no longer in place ;)

If it's backfiring on acceleration then it might be worth looking into but I understand a certain amount is normal on deceleration which, I stand to be corrected on.
