bertieboy Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Thanks for the replies to my last post. I think the bike is as ready as can be for the MOT. I have booked it in for this Tues morning! Now, i have both mirrors fitted, but one has been damaged and the mirror has been replaced with the stick on mirror card. It looks like a mirror but you can't see a clear image when you look into it, so it is not fit for purpose.Am i right in saying that if mirrors are fitted both should be 100% or it is a fail. But if no mirrors are fitted at all, this will pass? Quote
fq-craigus Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I know for a car you must have two rear facing mirrors. I would have thought u would be ok with what you got Quote

fq-craigus Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Just found a site for reftence. It stated that unbodied vehicles except mopeds must have both ns and os mirror so yes you need them. As long as you can see in them it will pass Quote
wr6133 Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 http://www.motuk.com/bike/1-1.asp That is the manual if you read that and action it you won't fail Quote
Invisible_Man Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Hey, I've had at least 3 bikes which I never fitted mirrors to. All passed the MOT without even a mention of mirrors. That includes my CB which I MOTd a few weeks ago. Cheers, IM Quote
Mr Fro Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Is it a fail if no mirrors are on the bike?Nope, you'll get an advisory only. Quote
Guest Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Is it a fail if no mirrors are on the bike?Nope, you'll get an advisory only. bit naughty of the tester to give you one of those as the MOT manual makes no mention of mirrors at all. and if it doesnt mention them.. then I'm not sure how an advisory could be given.. except on a whim. (or as a money making scam) which is fairly ridiculous. and could probably get the tester in trouble with VOSA. Quote
Stu Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 if fitted the must work IE no cracks in the glass etc if they arent fitted they cant MOT them and its not a fail Quote
Guest Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 if fitted the must work IE no cracks in the glass etc /quote]not sure you're right fella.. because if that were the case the MOT guide would say so.. the MOT guide makes no mention of mirrors whatsoever. Quote

wr6133 Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 One thing to remember though is just because something is "MOT legal" does not make it road legal, as your chances of outrunning the police on a 50cc are slim to none I'd check if it's road legal to not have mirrors..... just seems stupid to risk a ticket for the sake of a cheap set of mirrors. It may be fine I actually have no idea though as I can't think why anyone would want to not have mirrors! bertieboy Posted October 31, 2014 Author Posted October 31, 2014 Thanks for all of the replies, this seems like a bit of an unknown really! If i phone the garage who are doing the MOT and ask them the question, they should tell me one way or another.I'm thinking down the road of not fitted no failure. But if fitted they need to be both 100% or they will fail. So, as one of my mirrors is not a real mirror image (not clear or flat) i think they will fail them.I will call tomorrow and update this post to let everyone else know! Thanks again! Quote

Its always best to be sure.. you can look at the law. its available online. The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986regulation 33 deals specifically with mirrors on road vehicles.section 55 A two-wheeled motor cycle with or without a sidecar attached - No requirement Quote

Nothing mentioned about mirrors. Quote
bertieboy Posted November 1, 2014 Author Posted November 1, 2014 Update!!!!!I phoned the garage who are doing the MOT and asked them about the two issues that i was concerned about. And i was told" Mirrors are not included in the MOT" so don't worry about them. I explained that they are fitted but one has a poor mirror image as it is a cheap stick on replacement. He just said leave them as it doesn't matter! I also asked about my choke, as it works but keeps coming out of the lever bracket. Again i was told that not to worry as this is not included in the MOT Fingers crossed that he doesn't find a whole list of other faults! Quote
