I'm too tight to buy a bike specific satnav, what have you used instead & pros / cons please ?

I suckered a car navman onto my b12 tacho screen for a trip to Germany one year & the darn thing kept freezing just before, are we going left or right moments !

I know I can bluetooth to my scala comms from my phone but I'd like a screen to glance at,,,

I don't need this for Europe just Scotland in May.

All replies even mad ones gratefully received

Well if you won't mind using your phone then get a phone case & mount.

I got mine from ultimate addons. I think they do a large range of stuff (and my phones been through heavy rain and been fine).

moved to the right section

there is a few threads on here already about sat navs it might be worth a look

A lot of people say to use phone but I prefer to use a dedicated sat nav

you can get a tomtom rider V1 or 2 pretty cheap second hand on ebay these days

if your going to buy a car sat nav you ideally want one with itinerary planning on it so you can plan your routes if you want

there is a program called TYRE (trace your route everywhere) that is great for planning routes and transferring them to sat navs although it doesn't work with all sat navs but it works will all tomtom and garmin bike ones

Cheers Stu, I didn't think about 2nd hand & I should have done a search on the previous threads, it's cos I'm panicking as it's only 2 weeks away :eek2:

I got my tomtom rider V1 about 10 years ago and cant complain

it has a few faults but nothing that stops it been used!

the V2 is a little better and you can get the mounts for the V2 the V1 mounts are obsolete now!

TomTom software is available on android.

Free for first 50miles of navigation per day.

I have a Mio brand Car satnav I use on the bike. If you go on eBay there are lots of "factory reconditioned" satnavs being sold. I bought mine for almost 3/4 off retail price that way, came fully boxed, lifetime updates and appeared new.

Pro's - it was cheap, it works

Cons - can't really think of any, I suppose if I'm being really picky it is a little thin meaning I have to wedge something behind it in the yoke case to ensure the screen is up against the case.

To attach it I use one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorcycle-Yo ... 4d2640f205

Pro's - Cheap and it works (the cheap stem mount things are crap I tried them too), waterproof.

Cons - flat to the yoke so you can't alter the angle, on my bike that means the sat nav sits just a tiny bit out of your view so you do need to move your head a little to look at it.

Another vote for copilot.

Out of 15 lead riders in my club, I'm the only one that uses co-pilot and the only one that never seems to have navigational "issues" ;)

Cheers Chris. I have power supply parts on order... Will have a look later for mount. Found some ones with good reviews on Amazon.

On my Devon and Cornwall trip this week I had a regular bout of no signal which meant I had no navigation system costng me hours and many miles hunting for a signal

Does the Co pilot app work with no signal/3g. I looked into the Tomtom app for £25 but even that appears to need a signal.

I plan on doing the welsh challenge points soon and dont want to be lost with no signal especially with my small fuel tank!

I dont believe the tomtom needs a signal as you download the maps

you can use the tomtom free for 50 miles each month so download it and give it a go :thumb:

Yes mate and would strongly advise you to do so if you have got a limit on you data usage or you are going abroad. I switch off the data transfer when using mine. Just be sure your phone or whatever your using has the GPS switch on. Also be sure to have a power supply connected to your phone as in GPS mode it rinses your battery. All you need is a GPS signal, l use my Samsung without a sim card fitted

I appear to have broken Co Pilot, tried downloading to both iphone and Ipad and I get the message Copilot cant be downloaded at this time :?

I'll try again later

Yeah, the recent update to CoPilot is messed up. It'll get fixed soon, I'm sure. I recommend it — I've been using it with the car for years. There's a motorcycle profile you can set up differently if you prefer a different route to a car. I have the active traffic upgrade which is well worth the extra.

Some gloves come with tips that are made for that.
