thesloth Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 I have an aprilia sr50.In an effort to get it running I stripped it down and when I came to remove the exhaust, I got covered in oil.The exhaust must have been atleast 1/2 full for the amount the amount that poured out.So I was wondering if anyone could shed some light as to why this has happened and how I'd go about fixing/making sure it doesn't happen again. I promise I'll stop asking questions once it's fixed =PThanks guys Quote
Phooey Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 I can't answer your question, mate, but don't stop asking questions. That's how I learnt so much already. Eighteen months ago I barely knew the front wheel from the back and thanks to everyone on this forum I have rebuild the forks, in the process of upgrading brakes, chain and sprocket set change and many other little problems. If you don't ask, you wont learn. eastanglianbiker Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 as said in your other post it is partly cheap 2 stoke oil causing it and partly the amount going in with the petrol is possibly to much if it has got a manual injection pump for the 2 stroke it might be adjustable failing that just keep a good spark plug in it and you might have to clean exhaust out at regular intervals Quote
Steve D Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 Worn piston ringsSurely that only applies to a four stroke engine? Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 Worn piston ringsSurely that only applies to a four stroke engine?yes worn rings stop a 2 stroke building enough compression to run unlike a 4 stroke Quote
fq-craigus Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 Dont know the bike personally so didnt know it was 2 stroke sorry Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 no worries we all learn more every day you never know when the info will be usefull again Quote
thesloth Posted June 28, 2015 Author Posted June 28, 2015 Ok, so I have reassembled the bike.Getting spark, fuel, oil and air.Not sure about compression yet, so is there any way I can check the compression without a tester tool?I can get one if not but I'm not exactly a rich man. Also, any other ideas it could be if not? Thanks for all of your help Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 remove the spark plug and move the ht lead out of the way and place your thumb over the plug hole as the bike turns over the compression should try and push your thumb off the cylinder head, did you have the exhaust right off the bike to clean it out and before refitting try to blow down it to make sure it wasnt still blocked? I did try that, yes.Looks like I'm low on compression =\Time to find me a cereal box! (And pray it'll hold until I can get real gaskets) Quote
thesloth Posted July 2, 2015 Author Posted July 2, 2015 Hi guys.Bit of an update and a further question. After changing most gaskets, reassembling everything and rewiring the choke, I've got it running! So I'd like to say thank you to everyone who helped. However, at first start and for about 5-6 minutes of idling it pours smoke from the exhaust, thick and white.Could this just be the oil in the exhaust burning off?Thank you Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 what did you wash exhaust out with if it contained water then it is possbily just the excesses left in the pipe Quote
thesloth Posted July 2, 2015 Author Posted July 2, 2015 Just water, a scrubbing brush and a bit of carb cleaner on the stubborn parts. It does smell like oil. I'm going to put the fairings all back on then let it run for a while, see if I can clear it out Quote
Tango Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 A good run will probably burn the excess oil off....... Quote
thesloth Posted July 3, 2015 Author Posted July 3, 2015 It did, thanks. Now I've probably just broke something, but once againbit will not start. I have double triple and quadruple checked everything I can think of.Spark, fuel, air, I believe the autochoke is working (assuming I tested correctly) etc.I'm officially at a loss. I've spent my morning trying to get her running again. It's not starting with either start method.Any ideas? Thanks for your continued support Quote
Mr Fro Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 Auto choke? Don't like the sound of that! Any chance you can disable/remove it to see if that's the issue? Quote
thesloth Posted July 3, 2015 Author Posted July 3, 2015 Yep. Definitely the choke.I'll have to order a new one, but for the time being covering the air intake seems to prime it enough that it starts happily enough. And it's a simple fix for the time being. Thanks Quote
