fullscreenaging Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 (edited) This is what I used to give to my pupils when I was a driving instructor to help them. You don't have to memorise the numbers, just learn the formula. Speed MPH Thinking Distance Braking Distance O/all20 20 x1 20 4030 30 x1.5 45 7540 40 x2 80 12050 50 x2.5 125 17560 60 x3 180 24070 70 x3.5 245 315Hope that is self explanatory. Let me know if you need any help with itEdit: a quick google brought up this explanation. And a slightly different formula. That doesn't give the braking distance like mine.http://tips.drivingtestsuccess.com/lear ... y-test-uk/ Edited July 13, 2015 by fullscreenaging Quote
fq-craigus Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 20mph x 230mph x 2.540mph x 350mph x 3.560mph x 470 x 4.5 Quote
fullscreenaging Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 20mph x 230mph x 2.540mph x 350mph x 3.560mph x 470 x 4.5 That the overall stopping distance. You may be asked for braking distance only too. Quote
fq-craigus Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 I just learnt these, as all the mock tests i did i never get questions on thinking only or braking only distances and figured if i did ill sacrafice an answer for it, as im useless at written tests. And have to do another soon for hgv and thats 100! Dreading it Quote
Arwen Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 The only question I got on stopping distance were about "it is an icy day, how much does this increase your stopping distance" or something like that. Quote
fullscreenaging Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 It increases up to 10 times is the answer. Quote
fredc Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 I don't bother remembering braking distances I just work it outthinking distance is speed in feetbraking distance is speed squared /10 so thinking distance at 80 mph 80ftbraking distance 80 x 80 /10 ( 80 x 8 ) 640ft total 720ft Quote
nickjaxe Posted July 14, 2015 Author Posted July 14, 2015 Interesting...I wonder...can you take a pen and paper into the test room to work things out??? Quote
nickjaxe Posted July 14, 2015 Author Posted July 14, 2015 One thing I am not good at is sums in my head...I can do them on paper. Quote
