Hello there. Thanks for accepting me. I'm a Brit living in Spain and I've just bought a 1980 Yamaha XT 250, mid life crisis I think!!

I'm having real trouble finding a silencer for this and none of the other forums have even answered my posts. Please see below.

I could do with some advice please. I need a silencer for my 4 stroke 1980 xt 250 and I'm struggling to find an original one. Will a universal slip on one suffice? The pipe that comes from the head has an outside diameter of about 36mm, could I slip one straight on to that or would I need an expansion chamber section as per the original exhaust system? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated before my neighbours run me out of town.

Are there any other bikes with a similar set up that I could adapt maybe.

I dont think you will need an expansion chamber due to the fact its a 4 stroke

its probably a pre baffle or something

the original exhaust system has a spark arrester built into it just between the pipe coming out of the engine and the silencer itself its normally part of the silencer but i havent seen an exhaust of any kind for sale for a lot of years now for the early xt like yours you might have to just make something fit with big hammer and angle grinder

Take some pics of what you currently have.

If you just need a silencer it should be pretty simple to find one that fits, either from another bike or aftermarket.

If you need a whole system thats gonna be more tricky.

trouble is no one lists the exhausts for this year bike any more not original or pattern part

No, but if the OP has the front section of the pipe its hopefully just a matter of finding a slip on silencer that will fit to keep his neighbours happy.

Thanks for the input so far. I can't upload the pic with my iPhone. It says it's too big.

I have the rest of the pipe, it's just a case of slipping a silencer on but all the scrapyards I've been to don't seem to know what would fit other than the original. Where the silencer would slip on is 36mm o/d. Thanks
