Hi every one, my front brake cable has snapped on my bike, its a Derby Senda Terra about 4 years old, could anyone tell me where i might get some information on how to change it? I would gladly buy a workshop manual, but as i understand it, no one does one. I'd be very grateful for any help at all. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply Mr Fro, i'm afraid i know just about nothing about modern bikes, I do know that the breaks are disk brakes with calipers. There is a cable or something that goes to the break lever and that has snapped. Would the bike have a wire or something, it does look kind of thin to be a break cable. So if its not a cable what else can it be? I am totally lost.

I've had this bike three years, but only had it on the road for the first two years, summer running only, the last bike i had before this one was a James Villiers about 55-60 years ago and bikes have altered so much, i am totally lost with them.

If it was a car, i would have no problem at all, i can strip one down totally, but bikes???? Boy do i need help.

Thanks again Mr Fro, any advise would be gratefully received.

Thanks, Mr Fro, eastanglianbiker, GaryJM, RantMachine, Tango and Grumpy Old Git for all of your help here.

First of all Mr Fro mentioned that the bike could have Hydraulic brakes, I had a look and I recon he is bang on with that. So given a new word to search from Mr Fro, I searched “motorbike hydraulic brakes” and came up with a slew of interesting info.

I have found that they definitely are hydraulic brakes, so given that I went back to the garage and checked out what I first thought was a brake cable and it appeared to be two thin wires in side the plastic sleeve, one brown and one green, those two were joined to two spade terminals on a grey plastic thing. That plastic thing does have a sort of wound wire sleeve coming from it and that is what was connected to the front brake leaver.

Now from what I have just read in the latest posts here on the forum I think its correct to say that it will be a switch. Strangely non of the web pages I read mentioned anything about a switch??

If I had been working on the back brake, I would have instantly thought of the switch for the brake light, but a switch on the front brake???? That is totally new to me, but thanks to you guys I am learning quick. All I need to know now, is what the heck that switch is for? Can anyone tell me?

Thanks very much to each and everyone of you for your help, I could not have done it with out you. :D :D

Bob called it! :-)

It's just another brake light switch. If the connectors have come off, just pop them back on - don't think it makes any odds which way round. If the wires are broken then reconnect/solder them up.

Thanks Mr Fro, could you tell me which brake light? Does the rear brake light come on when the front brake is pulled ? Thanks.

The switch has snapped leaving part of it still inside brake leaver.

Yeah.....the rear brake light comes on when you apply the front or rear brakes.......so it sounds like your front brake switch has dismantled itself........new ones are generally cheap and easy to fit......
