MarkW Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Hi folks.Several of the pistons are seized in my front callipers, so I'm guessing a strip and rebuild is needed. Do I need a new set of seals or can I pull the pistons out, give them a clean and shove them back in?Ta! Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 pull the pistons out polish them up if they will if the chrome has all flaked off them then the pistons will need replacing, when you remove the old seals make sure you get the groove they sit in really clean and free of corrosion otherwise they will leak when rebuilt always use new seals and get some red rubber grease to lubricate the pistons back into the seals its the proper grease for doing the job Quote
Stu Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 depends how the seals are the whether they do need replacing! I have rebuilt loads without replacing but the seals and the pistons where already good if they are old and past their best I would replace and just keep on top of them for the future Quote
Tango Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 For the sake of a few quid I'd be inclined to replace the seals....... Quote
MarkW Posted October 12, 2015 Author Posted October 12, 2015 For the sake of a few quid I'd be inclined to replace the seals....... Yeah, I know - I was hoping to get it all sorted for Saturday when I head off to Basel though, and I'm running out of time now with work commitments. Quote
Tango Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Yeah.....you don't want to be rushing it when you're dealing with brakes....... Quote
Mr Fro Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 I would - should be able to get them by Weds/Thurs. Gives you enough time to get the rest of it sorted. Quote
Stu Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 order the seals now and have them end of the week and while waiting you could be stripping and cleaning the calipers Quote
Dav3y Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Replacing the seals could prove to be a false economy if the pistons are pitted and needing replacement. I'd be tempted not to bother until pistons have been freed up and inspected. In the short term, a damaged dust seal isn't going to cause too much bother but a damaged oil seal could cause a fluid leak/loss of braking. Quote
Fozzie Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I'd replace the lot, if you don't know when it was last done don't do bits and bobs, get the whole lot back to stock so you know more clearly the levels of wear on components. Quote
RantMachine Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 And if in doubt, remember that engine braking and a decent set of boots will do the job of front and rear brakes in a pinch Quote
MarkW Posted October 13, 2015 Author Posted October 13, 2015 Right...This morning I dismantled the calipers: the left one was no trouble, but the right one has some ABS sensor thing on it that refuses to budge, and is effectively tethering it to the bike. I persevered for a while before going completely Joe Pesci on it, but still no joy.The pistons on the left side look more or less OK. There was a tiny bit of corrosion around the rims, most of which came off with some 1500 grit wet & dry paper and brake cleaner. They certainly weren't bad enough to justify £20+ each to replace! The seals were also OK, but they're dirt cheap so i'll order a full set. Next i need to figure out how to get the right caliper off.The brake lines look really rough though, and i'm sorely tempted to replace them. I upgraded to braided hoses on the ZZR, but a full front set for the Honda will be well over £400. The OEM versions aren't much cheaper.Anyway, the upshot is that i have resigned myself to the fact that the Honda won't be going anywhere for a while, so i'll be loading up the trusty ZZR on Saturday for the trip to Basel.Hey ho.. eastanglianbiker Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 have you looked on the hel website they are good prices normally for braided hoses the full length one for my harley which has different size banjos each end was only 30 quid including vat and postage Quote

I do have one of their key rings though... Quote
cockercas Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 For the sake of a few quid I'd be inclined to replace the seals....... £111 for seals from honda. Quote
MarkW Posted October 13, 2015 Author Posted October 13, 2015 I found front and rear seal kits for around £60 from David Silver Spares. Honda prices are crazy! Quote
Stu Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 cheaper from these http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Powerhouse-Aut ... 34.c0.m322 and decent quality too I have used them in the past Quote
Fozzie Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 I second what Stu says there,Used them on all 3 of my old CBR600F's, my FZ6, and a handful of 125s. Never had a problem with quality. Quote
cockercas Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 I used them and found them crap.Ive just struggled to blow the pistons out the caliper with 115psi Quote
