Guest Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Hi folks,Thought I'd throw this out there see if anyone can come up with what's going on...So my girlfriend's z750 makes a grinding noise coming from what sounds like the bottom of the engine, only when it's cold. In addition to the noise, she complains of a bit of engine braking as well. When the engine is warm it's fine, but happens every day without fail when cold. Oil recently changed, didn't help (semi synth 10w 40 is in). Any ideas??? Quote
Guest Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Ok - I'll get my camera on her bike tomorrow and get something for you in the next couple of days. Quote
cockercas Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 If its the clutch side it could be a worn basket and the sound is the plates smashing side to side. Quote

Stu Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 it wont be the plates rattling! if it was it would do it all the time! Quote
Tango Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Did any debris come out in the old oil when you changed it? Is the noise still there if you pull the clutch in?Just fishing for clues at the moment...... Quote
Stu Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 kawasaki's are known for clutch rattle on idle and it goes when you pull the clutch this is the bearings but you can hardly hear it! Quote
Tango Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Yeah.....I was wondering if the noise went away when the clutch is pulled in, it may point to a gearbox issue.......otherwise it'll be something on the primary side. Maybe starter gear or sprag not disengaging correctly....... Quote
Stu Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 I was thinking along the same line to be honest Bob a good tell tale sign is like a ping sound when you switch it off if the sprag clutch is going Quote
Dav3y Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 My Z1000 has a clutch that's noisey as hell until you pull the lever. Its been like it since new.Does pulling the lever make a difference or just the time the engine has been running from cold ? Quote
Guest Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 It's just when it's cold... It can make a noise at pull away mostly, in 1st.Not sure if pulling the clutch lever in helps... Quote
Dav3y Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 Might sound stupid but if its just on pull away, is the drive chain adjusted/lubed correctly and not a sticky link ?Failing that could be sticky plates in the clutch. Quote

I'm thinking along the lines of gearbox/clutch to be honest... clutch plates... if this was the case I'd expect some slipping?! Quote
Dav3y Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 Googling seems to suggest a common complaint although there seems to be no definitive answer. Dunno what milage its done but could be worn basket/sticking plates ? Quote
Tango Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 Get your ear onto the end of a long screwdriver and go round the engine and gearbox to try to pinpoint where the noise is coming from, Phil...... A loose clutch basket could cause the noise.....but not necessarily mean clutch slip or drag...... Quote

Tango Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 They're only having you on if they insist that it has to be a left handed screwdriver...... Quote

It does work, just make sure the engine is not running and you wear the appropriate safety gear Quote
Guest Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 Not yet mate - We're picking up a YBR for her on Monday and the zed will be garaged over winter... I'll take some time to investigate then. Will update if I find anything Quote
Dav3y Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 LOL, another YBR. Been looking at RD125LC's myself but not sure I can warrant the cost but might talk myself into it if I get shot of the CBR. Quote

I actually owned a Mk1 RD125LC 28 years ago and bought a Micron for it at the time. My god it was loud. Microns and Allspeeds were all the rage then.Sold the bike for £400 and threw in the Micron with it. All these years later, I wish I had kept it now Quote
