Hi guys, just got past the 2 year waiting time between my A2 and DAS and I'm looking at getting the restrictors out. The standard way of doing DAS is obviously to just pay for a course where they give you a couple of days practice and then you use their bike for the test, but I am not keen on forking out that kind of cash. I'd much rather book the test and just do it on my own bike but there are a couple of foreseeable problems. Firstly, I'd need to put L-plates on the bike- no biggie. Stickies then off when the test is done. Secondly, I'm assuming the restrictor would have to be "out" when I do the test- obviously they aren't going to pull it apart to check it, but is it a risk worth running? If it is unrestricted and even if it isn't but I'm saying it is, that would mean I would need a fully qualified rider to act as an escort to the test centre right? That way I would be legally riding a full spec bike as if on a lesson. So...

Couuld I just get a fully qualified friend to ride with me to the test centre, then hang around till I've done the test? As long as I put L-plates on the bike and take the restrictors out, that should be kosher right? I just want to make sure I'm not missing a trick here before I look for a friend to help out.

I'm not sure how the insurance side works...but.... I think you're be uninsured as soon as you took the restrictors out and I dunno if you could get cover to use your bike on the test because you haven't passed your test.....

Also I think you have to have a qualified instructor ride with you not a mate (like you can in cars).

You could just be able to pay for an instructor and bike hire for a couple of hours - then you're all nice and legal.

Personally, I'm not totally sure of the legalities of who has to ride with you when you're on an unrestricted bike without a full licence but I'm sure someone on here will know for sure.

But what about getting your friend to ride your derestricted bike to the test centre with you on the back? Or do the test on your friends bike after he's ridden it to the test centre which would save you the hassle of derestricting your bike?

If you can get insurance to cover you on your own bike during the test (de restricted) you could add someone else on as a named rider. Get them to ride it to the test centre then do your test.

It is a lot of flaffing around. Could you talk to a school around you and see if they could do a deal on providing one of their bikes? It will probably work out cheaper I think.

:stupid: IMO the main problem will be the insurance covering you during the test. Better to check with ride school.

Other than that I do not think the instructor on the test will have any concerns about it.
