I want to ride a 400cc motorbike

I passed my 125CC CBT test on 04/2014

Do I need to renew my CBT? Do I just take a further Practical test? Do I need to do a theory test?

Have held the CBT for 2years and 1 month

I am 20 years old if that makes a difference..

any help is appreciated

I do hope you are not riding a bike now?

you CBT has expired and needs to be renewed

to ride anything bigger than a 125 you need to do CBT theory and practical tests

at your age you can do the restricted test which will allow you to ride a 400 which will probably need to be restricted

No I'm not only had a 125 for one year

I don't understand why it has to be renewed so pointless

Is there anyway I can go onto a restricted bike without doing a theory test? isn't there a direct access and a progressive access route? so confusing

because its not a test its just basic training

it runs out every two years so has to be done again

you cant do direct access as you are not 24

The reason it has to be renewed is because when CBT was introduced back in 1990 to replace the old part 1 test (which in my opinon was better) the DL196 (CBT certificate ) was valid for life with no need for any further training on the assumption that 99% of riders would take their test quite soon afterwards.

In reality, people did not take their test, and so they introduced the rule where riders who failed to take their test within two years would be disqualified from riding for 12 months and then have to do CBT again, but this was short lived as there were a lot of complaints from people who had no desire to obtain a full licence but relied on theor small powered machines for commuting to and from work.

So, they reintroduced the 2 year rule with no disqualification period, the presumption again being that the majority of people who did CBT would be looking to pass their full licence test sooner rather than later.

So which would you prefer? Re-take CBT or be disqualified for a year and still have to re-take CBT?

That is a very brief potted history. Happiest day of my riding and instructional career was the day I conducted my very last CBT and DAS course.

CBT is not a test, it is a course of instruction where you are required a level of knowledge and competence in each element of the 5 modules. You therefore cannot ass or fail, you simply have to satisfy your instructor that you are competent.

The riding test however is that, A Test.....

In respect of doing Direct Access or Accelerated Access, you cannot avoid doing the theory test. If nothing else, it makes sure that people at least look and learn the Highway Code at least once.

Also bear in mind that when CBT was introduced, there was no Theory test or Direct Access.

It was just CBT and the full licence test as there was no restriction at that time either.

Because CBT isa training not a license. After CBT they gave you DL196 certificate which has expiry date 2 years after you have passed the training.

In order to ride any other bike than 125 you need license. To get motorcycle A2 restricted license you need to apply for provisional license. If you have car B license you do not need provisional. Also you need valid CBT, to pass motorcycle theory test and 2 practical tests mod 1 on off street test area and mod 2 on public streets.

Bear in mind if your CBT expires before you do all tests you need to start again. Theory test is also valid for 1 year only. If it expires before you do all you need to do it again.

Age 21-23 - you must be 21 to hold a full, unrestricted A licence. However, at this age you can only take the test if you have held an A2 licence for two years or more.

After 24 you can do directly full A license.

If you have passed and have A2 license and want to apply for full unrestricted A license you need to do again only mod 1 and mod 2. You do not need to do again CBT or theory test.

So to ride a 400cc restricted or not I need to renew the CBT, do a theory and also do a practical? right?

If you are 20 you can do A2 restricted license only. Which gives you 400cc restricted only.

Short answer: Yes, you must do a CBT, theory AND practical to be able to ride anything bigger than a 125.
