Worn Dogs or something else....

So I'm having an issue with the GSXR 600 K2, I've googled around and it all seems to come back to it probably being an issue with the gear dogs being worn.

Essentially what's happening is in 2nd gear when bringing it up to about 11k RPM the bike feels like it's losing power and then biting again almost instantly.

Has anyone had experience with a similar issue?

I'm trying to make sure I rule out everything else before I cough up a few hundred to get the engine out etc and find that it was something else.

hmmm it doesn't drop out of gear. All gears hold fine, it's just when rolling on hard and hitting 11k RPM quickly in 2nd gear it does the little skip.

Any ideas on what else to look at?

I've tried it in 1st gear and it doesn't do it. Shall try 3rd/4th etc after work (if it stays dry) and see if it does it there also.

are the revs rising but no more forward motion? it could be clutch slip too

if its not clutch slip it will more than likely be the common second gear worn shift fork or worn dogs!

Not worn dogs it's a worn selector fork. I say this some certainty because my old gsxr 1100 had exactly the same symptoms. So the good news is that its not going to be too expensive and the bad news is that its an engine out and partial strip down.

I've been reading so many different threads and everyone is suggesting different things to replace when this happens. I guess until I either pull it apart or pay someone to do it I won't know for 100% what needs to be replaced.

Now I need to decide if I try and pull it apart myself or not

It's literally only for a second and then it's back pulling again. Definitely sounds like it's a common issues though.

Oh also.... should I stop riding it? or just try and not use 2nd as much?

Think it'll be a couple of months until I've got the cash to get it looked at if I don't try myself.

I did mine myself, you don't have to touch the top end and you may be able to cut a few corners such as leaving the clutch in place. I bet its just one selector fork that's worn i.e. the one that pushes 2nd gear. You will need some Suzuki Bond jointing compound to re seal the crankcase halves.

Shall start going through the manual and then hopefully get round to it in the next couple of weeks.

Any recommendations on where I can pickup the selector forks from? Is it still possible to get brand me that will fit or is the unlikely?

I did a tour of Scotland with my bike in this condition. I just changed up from first to third but it was an 1100 with plenty of power.

Ok, so I won't worry too much just yet.

I'll maybe try and put it off until the end of summer and just not use it too much between now and then.
