Yamaha Panniers

I purchased the Yamaha panniers and back box for my super Tenere, since purchase I've been riding round with them fitted and a pillion a lot of the time with no problem. I've just read on the internet that Yamaha recommends you should either have the panniers fitted without the back box or back box without the panniers, you shouldn't ride with both on at the same time, to me this doesn't make sense, I haven't had any problems, does anyone know or can anyone shed any light on why Yamaha make this recommendation??

Forgive me for asking the obvious... if Yamaha say no to panniers and top box combined, why do they show both fitted to a Tenere on their website page for the bike.

 

 

 

 

they even show a bike being ridden. with full luggage in situ.

 

 

Could there perhaps be some confusion? is it possible that there is a certain combination of genuine luggage that is not compatible... for instance the top box interferes with the panniers and they cannot be opened when the top box is fitted? Thats not an unusual situation.. but is usually due to after market luggage being mixed with genuine or non-matching cases.

The set up in those photos is the exact same set up that I have on my machine, it's ludicrous that they advertise it with everything in situ and then say you shouldn't do it,

My advice.... dont pay any attention to AMERICAN versions of a website... stick with the European side.

does it say anything like this on the European version of the website?

(probably not... europeans tend to pay attention to warnings and then dont SUE.,. because they chose to ignore a simple warning about weight limits)

They are probably covering their arse

On the fjr there have been a few known cases where the subframe has cracked this is due to the fact the rear carrieris made out of nylon and flexes causing stress on a single mount which then cracks the subframe. The solution is to fit a Givi rack which is solid and mounts to five points they also recommend a max load of 5kg!

I'm pretty sure they recommend one or the other too!

I seem to remember a few years ago an American (naturally) managed to induce a weave on his FJR while riding at silly speeds with full luggage, and then sued Yamaha on the basis that the bike wasn't fit to be ridden at around 120 MPH fully loaded, and being in America he won his case, so Yamaha recommended not to use all the luggage together. It was around the time I got/was getting my FJR and decided there was no chance of me getting myself into that situation, and in any case I took the panniers off the day I got it and they never went back on - it got nicked a year later.

Thanks for the advice guys, I've been using it fully loaded since I got it, never had any problems so couldn't understand why they were making those recommendations, didn't respond to an email querying it either, I like the GIVI panniers, I only got the Yam ones because I got a good deal with the bike and to be honest they done the job as expected for me without any problems.
