billy sugger Posted October 27, 2021 Posted October 27, 2021 Just had a nice reply from the makers of hammerite. They can't recommend a lacquer, because they've never tried one on their products, but hammerite can be overpainted so they see no reason to not lacquer over it if required, but just do the usual test a inconspicuous area first. As it happens I have lacquered the fork stantions as they are in the firing line of all the road crap, and it's not caused any issues 1 Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted October 27, 2021 Posted October 27, 2021 I usually find that anything cellulose based is ok so long as the Hammerite has fully cured. Spirit based stuff is less likely to interact with it. The one snag I find with Hammerite is that it goes brittle with age. Fork stantions will be fine as they are solid but on car bodies which flex slightly Hammerite fails very quickly. I use Ronseal No Rust on car bodies. I used to use Hammerite on one of my trailers and did it every year. One year I couldn't get any so bought some No Rust instead, I didn't paint the trailer for about 7 years after that. It depends what it is needed for. For out and out rust protections the Ronseal beats Hammerite hands down, but if you need a decent finish then the Hammerite is much better. Quote
