S-Westerly Posted July 17, 2022 Posted July 17, 2022 Turns out I'll be doing an unexpected road trip from the UK to Munich in mid August. Got my reservations on the Channel Tunnel but now deciding how I'll do it. Want to avoid autoroutes/ autobahns but I haven't got that long. Crossing early morning on the 12th and need to be in Munich on the 14th. So basically 2 stops on the way and similarly on the way back. Hopefully will be fun though. 3 Quote
rennie Posted July 17, 2022 Posted July 17, 2022 It's a long way! car or bike? I can't see how you can do it in that time scale without going on Autobahns. Slightly off topic but we loosely followed a route called "The Romantiche Strasse" from around Hameln down to The Alps in the campervan Quote
S-Westerly Posted July 17, 2022 Author Posted July 17, 2022 (edited) It's a 1000 km give or take so roughly 500 km a day so not too bad. Working on an equivalent to A roads route. Going on the bike too. Edited July 17, 2022 by S-Westerly 1 Quote
Gerontious Posted July 17, 2022 Posted July 17, 2022 I would spend day one on a dash to the Rhine. Then slow down the next day using German ‘B’ roads to get down to Munich. Day 1 head for Strasbourg, for example. Using autoroutes as french main roads are generally arrow straight, for the most part. From Strasbourg I would just let the sat nav guide me. Avoid motorways and then it’s a 6hr ride (non stop) 370km more or less, so a much more relaxed day with a few stops and a decent lunch break. of course you could do the opposite for the return. Autobahn dash across Germany to the Rhine and the slow down for the ride across France. Or you could head north and take in the Ardenne mountain range that stretches across Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium. Or hug the border and stay mostly on the French side. Quote
S-Westerly Posted July 18, 2022 Author Posted July 18, 2022 Thanks. Was thinking of heading for Colmar on day 1 and as the roads across northern France aren't generally interesting the autoroutes may well get used for part of the journey. My crossing to France gets me there at 0830 so I've the full day to use. On the way back was thinking of the Ardennes as I've only skirted them before and I know they are interesting. Half the fun is planning a route. 1 Quote
S-Westerly Posted July 19, 2022 Author Posted July 19, 2022 Calais to Epinal on day 1. Epinal to Ulm on day 2 and Munich on day 3. Spend a week giving moral support to my brother and drinking beer. Then home probably by way of the Ardennes spending my last night in Namur. 2 Quote
