How Much Power Does the 2022 Aprilia RS 660 Make?

The Aprilia RS 660 is a heavy hitter in the middleweight supersport category, delivering serious muscle to the class in terms of performance and versatility. It’s not only more practical than the howling inline-four 600s in terms of overall flexibility and comfort, but goes for the same entertainment value and knife-edge sharpness of the replica racers it competes against.

The RS is powered by a liquid-cooled 659cc parallel-twin engine that’s been heavily influenced by Aprilia’s RSV4 1100 superbike. As Kevin Cameron explained in great detail, engineers chopped the rear cylinders off the existing V-4 engine, increased the stroke of the remaining cylinders, and tuned the new powerplant for a balance of performance and versatility.

Interestingly, our test unit is one of 1,500 RS 660s to receive the attention-catching and limited-edition Stars and Stripes livery celebrating Kaleb De Keyrel’s MotoAmerica Twins Cup championship victory.

We ran the 2022 Aprilia RS 660 on Cycle World’s in-house Dynojet 250i dynamometer ahead of an upcoming middleweight shootout with the Yamaha YZF-R7, recording its horsepower and torque figures for comparison. The Aprilia tallied a ripping 89.16 hp at 10,520 rpm and 44.85 lb.-ft. of torque at 9,540 rpm. Despite the overall flexibility in power delivery, thanks to a relatively flat torque curve with nearly 80 percent of torque available at 4,000 rpm, the RS 660 is happy at high revs. A slight bump in horsepower is seen at 7,000 rpm, which allows the RS to rip toward redline. This is where the fun is had.

Now let’s place the RS 660 against its Japanese middleweight competition for some real-world fun.
