Juve,s Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 Hello everyone, I recently acquired an old Honda Cbr1000F Hurricane 87 with 50,000 km/30,000 miles. The bike has been sitting since the year 2000 and was about to be thrown away when it was given to me for free. As a student, I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to work on this bike and bring it back to life. Before trying to start the motorcycle, I changed all the liquids, including the oil, coolant, and brake fluid. However, I'm having some trouble starting the bike. It seems to be getting stuck on heavy metal blows, and I'm not sure where to look to fix the issue. I have recorded a video (https://streamable.com/ogn8ca )of my attempts to start the bike. In the video, you can hear the bike attempting to start, but it seems to be getting stuck on heavy metal blows. I would greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions on where to start troubleshooting this problem. If anyone has experience with older Honda motorcycles or has dealt with a similar issue, I would be grateful for any tips or insights. Thank you in advance for your help! Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 It's not far off. Have you changed the spark plugs? Also check the air filter isn't clogged with dirt. Starting carb bikes can be a bit of an art setting the choke right and catching them on the throttle. Be wary of flooding it. 1 Quote
Fender1515 Posted April 29, 2023 Posted April 29, 2023 After the bike standing for that length of time, I would investigate carbs, blocked jets, stuck floats, seals also perish over a period of time perhaps. Best of luck. Quote
Tinkicker Posted April 30, 2023 Posted April 30, 2023 The "heavy metal blows" you are talking about are just the starter clutch disengaging and reengaging as the motor fires. Normal. You are not getting enough fuel. It may be the cold starter mechanism in the carbs stuck (assuming you have pulled the choke on), blocked carbs or a bad fuel pump / blocked fuel filter. Quote
KiwiBob Posted April 30, 2023 Posted April 30, 2023 Is the fuel fresh/new? If you haven't done it already put some new spark plugs in .. It nearly started so I don't think you're too far away. Quote
