ihorator Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 I warm up my motorcycle in the yard before I ride out. However, when I shift into first gear, the bike jerks forward and sometimes stalls. The clutch stops working and the shift pad doesn't move, so I can't shift into neutral. All these problems go away if I press the clutch and roll the bike back and forth a few times. After that it starts working normally. This only happens when the motorcycle is started for the first time during the day. I have read that this may be due to the clutch discs sticking. It's not critical, but it's still annoying Please advise how to solve this problem P.S. Motorcycle - MUSSTANG FOSTI 150. I'm a dumb newbie, I've only been riding a motorcycle for a couple of weeks Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 There is usually some drag on motorcycle clutches, but it shouldn't stall or be impossible to select gears. Check the cable adjustment to make sure that's within specifications - that the simplest first port of call. On some bikes if they stall in gear then getting it back into neutral can be a bit tricky. If rocking it slightly sorts it out then there's not a lot wrong. I've had bikes that do that. A cold engine is often prone to stalling so it depends how warm your bike is when you first engage gear. Is it fuel injection or carb? One of my bikes has carbs and first thing you need to be gentle with the clutch. 1 Quote
k3lv Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 Check your side stand switch . My gsxr 750 used to jump and stall no matter how warm I got it or what oil I used .....turns out the tab pushing the side stand switch had bent so wasn't fully pushing the switch all the way Quote
Capt Sisko Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 Check what oil you're using. Too viscous & thick oil can cause the clutch plates to stick when the engine is cold. Once the engine is running and the oil has heated up everything is fine, but cold you can get problems. Quote
ihorator Posted July 17, 2023 Author Posted July 17, 2023 The solution turned out to be easy. I found out yesterday that a lot of people start their motorcycle with the clutch pulled in and tried to do the same. After that, shifting to 1st gear at the first start of the motorcycle became normal 1 Quote
