Motown_Ben Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 Hi there everyone, First time poster here so please go easy on me I'm approaching 50 and have ridden bikes on and off since my early 20's (currently enjoying my 1090 KTM adventure I bought at the start of the year), after years on the pillion my wife decided she wanted a bike of her own. She passed her CBT a few months back and I bought her a nice used Mondial HPS 125 to ride, she loves it and is now talking about the step up to a bigger bike next year. She's similar age to me and has a full car license so I'm wondering what her route to a full bike license is? I've looked on the Gov website but TBH found it pretty confusing! In the short terms her dream would be one of the newer Royal Enfield 350 Hunter and I'm not sure she would want something much bigger than that really. If anyone can shed some light on the best course of action it would be helpful. cheers Ben Quote
KiwiBob Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 (edited) She can either go for the A licence .... Pass 2-part practical test on a motorcycle at least 595cc and at least 50kW with a minimum kerb weight of 180kg - you must pass module 2 within 6 months of passing module 1. She can then ride any motorcycle. Or the A2 licence .. Pass 2 part practical test on a bike at least 245cc and between 20kW and 35kW - you must pass module 2 within 6 months of passing module 1. She can then ride a motorcycle with power up to 35kW. The tests are exactly the same just done on different size bikes! Either way she will need to pass the motorcycle theory test first! Unless she is tiny and finds the bikes too big the A licence would be the best bet. If she goes to your local riding school and has a chat they should help her choose. Fairly simple then just depends on what size bike she feels happy on. Quote
daveinlim Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 Depending where you live, finding a suitable time to go and take the theory test can be a pain. There's apps and/or books you can buy to prepare for the theory test. After years of driving she will probably know most of it but some are bike specific questions. She might as well do the full test. Most schools have fairly small and nimble bikes. The place I did mine had lots of honda cb650 and kawi z650 which are both fairly lightweight and nimble. Just have a look around at local training centres and check their social media pages, you'll be able to see what they use then. Quote
KiwiBob Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 For the theory test the tricky bit is the hazard perception test. ... https://www.bike-theory.co.uk/theory-test/hazard-perception-test Quote
S-Westerly Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 The bit about having to pass Mod 2 within 6 months of Mod 1 - is that new? When my son was in the RN he did his full A licence. He passed the Mod 1 but was posted out to Bahrein for 6 months and did his Mod 2 when he got home. My understanding was the Mod 1 lasted until the Theory test expired. Quote
