daveinlim Posted December 4, 2023 Posted December 4, 2023 Bennetts is an insurance company but they have a great YouTube channel. Search for them and lock or security and you'll find reviews of various bits. Multiple security items are best. Have a solid chain and lock for over night. Maybe a couple of smaller disc locks for out and about. A cover can actually help as thieves don't want to be dealing with them. Keep in mind where you park. ALWAYS use your steering lock. If your bike is stolen and recovered and it was found not to have the steering lock on then insurance may not pay out. Also on insurance, compare the price with and without locks and chains. Sometimes the price is the same but if you quote without then your insurance company isn't expecting locks on all the time which they could otherwise hold against you. Welcome to life on 2 wheels. peepae Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 I've got a cheap oxford disc lock & Oxford HD Chain without an anchor so basically acts as a second disc lock. I got TP & theft insurance with no excess so if anything happens I'll call on them. - I have not told insurance about any locks and if you tell them you will have to have them on at all times. As Dave mentioned. Quote
Capt Sisko Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 (edited) Just be careful about specifying a particular brand/make of lock on your insurance policy as the insurance company will expect you to use it every time you park up. That means not just at home, but if you just pop out and park up for five minutes whilst you pick up your take away. You've said you are using an XYZ Ulock, they're given you a cheaper premium because of that and if you haven't used it and the worst happens, somewhere buried in the T&Cs is going to be something that entitles them to give you a reduced payout. This leads onto issue number 2. Some of the scrotes are now doing what is known as DNA free crime. From our perspective that means they take the remains of the cut up lock with them. At home hopefully you can show where they forced entry into you garage or lock up if they did that, but out on the street or in a car park all you're left with is an empty parking spot and no proof you used a lock at all. Again this could lead to a reduced pay out. Not sure if there is a way around this other than hoping someone caught them on CCTV / Ring. Problem number 3. Your existing lock gets damaged so you buy a new, maybe even a better one. Does that mean because the old XYZ Ulock was written into your policy you've got to tell the insurance company about the change, (and they'll likely as not they'll charge you for the amendment, even if it's for a better lock). I don't know, BUT what I do know is that the cheap insurance companies will look at any reason to shaft you when it comes to paying out. The above makes me sound like a cynical old git, and maybe I am, but I've been around this planet long enough to know how some of the less reputable companies work. Me, I've got an alarmed disc lock with 14mm bolt at the front and Litelock Core at the back. If I'm just out for the day and the bike is never that far away I just take the disc lock. If I know the bike is going to be out of sight for a while or I'm staying away then the Litelok comes with me as well and sometimes even the very secure but light weight Kryptonite D Lock I have for my bicycle. And no, I haven't told the insurance company about any of them. Edited December 6, 2023 by Capt Sisko 3 Quote

Massive chonky bois for the garage, with a ground anchor, and 12mm chains and u-locks and the roundlock for out and about. Quote
