Jon 33 Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 (edited) Hi there. I wonder if anyone can help me. At the end of last year, my dad died and he left a garage full of his tools, machines and his bike. My mum now has a bunch of stuff that she needs me to help sort out. I am afraid I don't know much about bikes, so I am a bit vague/clueless about details. I don’t live in England anymore but I will be going back there for a month or so during the summer and spending that time sorting out and clearing out his garage and trying to minimise the work for my mum. Over the years my dad was building/built a bike. It is an old-style bike. He bought a 2015 Sinnis SC 125 bike and used it to make his bike. A family friend told my mum that she should probably try and advertise it as a field bike or unfinished project or spares and repairs. Does anyone know what would be the best course of action? What would be the best place to sell a bike? EBay? Is there a bike-specific place/site? If this is not the best place to ask, are there any other forums/sites that I could ask at? There are also still his mini lathe/milling/drilling machines. Any advice on where is the best place to sell those (tinkerer forums etc)? Sorry for the vague requests, and I appreciate any help. {Edit} I forgot to mention, my mum doesn't have any details of it being registered, so as far as I can tell it has never been registered/insured or anything {Edit} Jon. husoi Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 That's a beauty Gumtree and Facebook marketplace could be other places to advertise it. Very likely there are groups around where your mom lives where the bike can be advertised. Even the tools. 1 Quote
Nick the wanderer Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 Hi, sorry to hear about dad. From the pics it looks like he enjoyed what he did, he has changed the front end of the bike, looks a good job although I have to say the rake doesn't look quite right . Probably my eyes or the the angle of the pics. It's a Chinese bike so not worth a great deal but does look good. I bet if you have a search around he will have had a log book for that. They have a for sale section on here. Good luck. Quote
RideWithStyles Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 sorry to hear about that. ebay as is for project but you'll be selling it to a smaller potential buyers or if you have the skills/time revert it back to std to sell to recover more money/quicker. Nic is correct rake has been changed /off setted quite sharper. hence where the shockes are positioned infront thats roughly where the std rake would be. i can see what he was doing or to achieve, takes some effort and will to want to do that, like the stands, the shadow board and tidy area, obviously some back ground and good with his hands. good luck. Jon 33 Posted June 14, 2024 Author Posted June 14, 2024 Thanks, for the help guys. You are right about the front end. He built the whole frame (You can’t really see from the pictures, but it’s actually a hardtail) and forks and designed the head to be that steep. I have no idea what he did with the original frame/forks/wheels, I think I will be busy this summer searching and sorting. Thanks again. I appreciate it. Jon. 1 1 Quote
Capt Sisko Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 (edited) The problem you're going to have selling it is those suspension modifications are serious modification and this may cause a concerns for both buyers and insurers. As the builder can no longer explain what he's done & show the quality or show his qualifications / what a good engineer he was, buyers could be put off by the simple fact that it's a big unknown. Ditto with insurers. They may well ask for an engineers report (which the proposer will have to pay for) before they'll even quote, and even if that's fine, the cost of insurance is likely to be higher than otherwise because that in the event of a claim you've got a custom build to deal with. This scenario can't be unknown as choppers & trikes do get insurance, but I should imagine it's not so straight forward as dealing with a standard bike. A similar case may come to registering it for the road, the new owner is likely to need a single type approval(?). All that is going to have a big impact on the value of something that may not have that great a 'used bike' value in the first place. Edited June 15, 2024 by Capt Sisko 1 Quote
