So I'm a new rider but after frequent trips abroad due to work I wasn't able to ride for 4 years. I just got my bike out of storage (125cc Yamaha XVS Drag star) and I am keen to make sure she is in working order. Any rough ideas of the work that may need doing and possible costs?

Thanks!

I wouldn't go ridiculous with it, but certainly change the oil and filter, check the calipers to see if they've seized and it'll probably need a new battery too. The most expensive definitive thing to do is to put new tyres on, they'll be past their best if it's been stood for 4 years.

You could go further and change the brake fluid and coolant (assuming it's not air cooled).

Other than that just check all the electrics/lights work and get out and ride it, it'll probably make itself known if it does need anything else.

As for yourself, possibly a new helmet if you believe the manufacturers claims about life span.

Welcome to the forum

Off top of my head, oil, filters, brake fluid, possibly new tyres as they might of developed flat spots from not moving.  Battery should get away with just charging though that's also a possibility to replace.

Was it left with any petrol in the tank? carbs may need a clean as could be gummed up. Chain will need a good clean and lube.

Thats all I can think of at moment, I'm sure someone else will come along with more

Replace the oil at least. Probably also wise to replace the brake fluid as it's hygroscopic even when not in use. Coolant is good for 5 years so check when that was last done.

Check the date on the tyres and their condition.  If they've been indoors out of sunlight and kept fully inflated you may be OK. But if they're getting old or have been left at low pressure replace them.

Drain the fuel system and replace with fresh fuel.

You'll probably need a new battery as well.

Check all cables, lights, fasteners.

Check the brakes, make sure the pistons aren't seized. Check wheel and head bearings. Check the suspension for signs of any oil leaks.
