Due to me clearly having a mid life crisisI have bought a K&N filter for the bike. The bikes got decat and headers on already, will it need a remap to not run rough or will the ECU adapt? My car for example can alter its fueling within +/- 7% so I could stick a non standard filter and not have any issue.

The bike is a 23 plate BMW F900R

The difference aftermarket filters make is marginal. So your bike ought to be able to adapt to it no problem. There are many claims made for aftermarket filters in terms of performance. They are invariably wildly optimistic.

The filter will not make a great deal of difference.

The pipe will. I'm guessing it's straight through. It'll go like stink flat out, pop and bang and backfire on shut off like mardi gras meets fireworks night. In between gear changes and on shut off. You'll be the kid with the cherry bomb on his Saxo.

Before you waste good money on a remap get the sound how you want it. Because if you change the pipe it'll change the map. And my money is on you changing the pipe because it will be (is) too loud.

I know you're all excited and revved up and ready to go,  just trying to offer a been there view.

Not for mine, the damned thing's fast enough as it is.

Just out of interest.

Oh it definitely pops and bangs 😂

I am indeed currently the kid with a cherry bomb. I imagine within a few rides I'll return to be adult I am and choose something more sensible.

OK I may well just not bother with the filter immediately and do as you say regarding waiting on the remap till I've settled on an end can choice. It will almost certainly get changed.

Pipe doesn’t always, As like with any modifications they are only as good to what was poor as std/what was on before hand?

there are generally positives and minus with everything, you just need to work out what your prepared to potentially “gain” from the “losses”.

a modern std bike can change its maps- to a small degree point, but how much is down to the software and hardware that was put into it by the manufacturer of what they thought is enough.

you have changed quite enough of the bike, probably more than the manufacturer would account for as a std variable between bikes, degradation and region use cases.

each item you’ve added moves this point one way or the other including up or down…..which has implications.
I would advise a remap, if you find a generic one with roughly your mods accounted for might be enough but as like with many things…where is you bike as is on its base map now? Does the new generic one move these sweet points in the correct direction? was it done correctly and do you trust it? So that them means a finding a trusted remapper to find.

the popping and banging is from the fuel leaving the chamber and igniting in the exhaust- depending if it’s in the manifold, link, cat or exhaust. Fun for shits and giggles but not ideal for the engine, exhaust and your fuel economy mid to long term

Cheers ears. As discussed I think I'll wait till I've chosen a final end can and speak to a few places. The two I linked seem somewhat sensible.
