RideWithStyles Posted April 1 Posted April 1 Yes bet it was, It can only get better after those! Quote
Egon247 Posted April 3 Author Posted April 3 Back in the man cave. I knew it would need some more stuff doing to it, so no huge surprise. So, it's still starting on 3, it's not happy starting at all. All the sparks are there so it has to be fuel related due to it being one of those simple engines with almost zero electronic stuff. The clutch has been ordered as anything over 50% throttle and it just goes "nah mate" and slips. Biting point is the last 10mm of lever travel too. Maybe some adjustable levers might fall into my basket.... 1 Quote
Egon247 Posted April 21 Author Posted April 21 So. I'm still alive. Clutch done, wasn't a bad job actually as you can do it without draining the oil. Just plop it on the side stand for a couple of days and then go to it. The hardest part is getting all the old gasket off. That took a while! Bought an adjustable clutch lever too, so that went on with a bit of fiddling. Had to bleed the clutch again as it was doing precisely nothing after the change, so a bit of bleeding and it sounds ok. Forgot to soak the plates in oil, so started it up for a bit to get them oily and then left it. Then a bit of investigation on the starting issues. The carbs were out of balance AGAIN. so the diy doodad came out and I have worked out it's a shite site easier without the tank on to do the carbs. Got there in the end. It's starting a bit better. I'll give it a while then if it doesn't play ball I'll have each of the carbs in bits again. Onward and upward.... 5 Quote
Hairsy Posted April 21 Posted April 21 Great to hear you're still going. It'll be a sweet victory when she's done. Always enjoy your updates. 1 Quote
Egon247 Posted April 28 Author Posted April 28 Well. Back in the mancave again. Went out today as another shakedown to see if problems were cured. Some were, some weren't. Started better, still lumpy but a few minutes and it seems to settle down. Went Dartford to Maidstone to have a nose in j&s and on the way back the fuel level dropped enough to need reserve. So at least the tube mod is working. Scared the crap out of me though. Then, a couple of miles further on I went for a handful and only got revs, no go. The clutch slipped again. Meh. It has new plates and springs so it can only be the hydraulic side of things now. The bite is right at the end of the lever movement too. Air? Dunno. Things to note from shakedown: She's heavy. I'm rusty. Earplugs rock although I have a headache now. Riding position is reinforcing the fact that I'm rusty and getting older.... Stay tuned for the next exciting episode of "ah Jesus, now what?" 2 1 Quote
Hairsy Posted April 28 Posted April 28 I would think its unlikely to be the hydraulics - air in the system would make it impossible to get the clutch to slip enough, not to cause it to keep slipping. Could be a slave cylinder issue, stopping the piston return to its proper position. Dirt or corrosion? If you're confident that the clutch was put back together properly then slave cylinder is where I'd start my investigations. Quote

I put a new seal kit in it and it seemed ok. Although it was a sod to bleed. I rebuilt the master too, I wonder if there's anything in there that would stop it from returning all the way. I'm off work for a couple of weeks so I can play while the clan are out. Edited April 28 by Egon247 Quote
Egon247 Posted April 28 Author Posted April 28 I also wonder if there's something in the fact it only did it when it was hot. Maybe bring the oil and filter change forward (I was gonna do 500 miles on the new oil and filter then change it again, as it's been sat for so long) just in case. Quote

Stupid question, but you did use Motorcycle specific oil of the correct grade? I’ve learned this lesson the hard way, used car oil after a rebuild knowing it would be chucked away after start up & promptly forgot. Sent it to get the carbs set up on a dyno & the clutch was slipping like mad, had to drain and flush the oil plus clean the whole clutch, an expensive mistake. 1 Quote

Yeah, oddly one of the few oem things I've purchased. Bought a Honda oil filter and oil as I kinda figured it would need some home comforts on its way back to the road I've just ordered a clutch master cylinder rebuild kit though, I've been looking at my receipts and with all the chaos I think I may have missed off the master cylinder on the "list of things that need rebuilding" list. The adjustable lever is off as well as it doesn't look like it was returning far enough and I cba to Dremel the life out of it yet. 1 Quote
Egon247 Posted Sunday at 18:30 Author Posted Sunday at 18:30 Today was a dog day. Also a learning day.. Parcel arrived with all the bits in I needed, clutch master cylinder rebuild kit, a gasket for the slave cylinder and some new foot peg covers, cos why not. After some faff and some swearing at the old retaining circlip, all bits were apart, cleaned and put back together. The adjustable lever was relegated to the "shit I don't need or have time for in my life" pile as it was another dimension of hassle. Put it all back on and filled it with dot4.... Would. Not. Bleed. Like no pressure at all. Swearing ensued and off it came, thinking I'd messed something up. Nope. All good. Weird. Still no bleeding. Off it came again. Only this time I got up close and personal....and the little hole at the bottom, next to the bigger hole (technical term that) was blocked solid. I had to shove it with a nozzle cleaner to make the hard lump of resin/old brake goo come out. I laughed. So, back together, back on, 30 minutes getting the air out of the top before bleeding it and tadaaaaa. One clutch. Yay. Then I changed the fuel tank level sensor for one that actually worked, swapped a bit of hose that was bothering me and she's ready for another day. Or another shakedown. You never really know. .... I forgot to do pictures as I was very drunk last night and a bit fluffy this morning so I'll see if I have anything relevant....nope. how about two 15 year old crash hats? 2 2 Quote
