Gearing

I used to have a manual 50cc, and I learned how to gear on it, but it was just a "4 up", so I understand how to change gear.

I have just brought a Yamaha 125cc, and its got no digital number clock and it is "1 down 4 up". And I don't know how the hell that works.

Is the gearing set up like this?

4th

3rd

2nd

N

1st

So when I am in N, I have to flick down to get to 1st. Then flick up twice to get to 2nd? :??

Ahh, 1 other question,

Is 2nd for pulling away? Because I heard somewhere 1st is for hill starts. Or is that just with high cc bikes?

First is for pulling away on all bikes, the only vehicles I know of that use first for hill starts are lorries.

I always use first on the tiger (955cc).

you'll find it has 5 gears (1+4).. some bikes (suzis) have it stamped into the cover...
