  1. Even if they do knock a couple of quid off the tests, hell, if they make the tests free, the barrier of having to go through so many pass/fail tests is significant. Most of which are performed on a bike bigger than you're allowed to practise on independently. So pushing up the cost of training too, as it all needs to be DAS / hire-bike style. And to my understanding you CANNOT directly access the A2 test, you must first go through the A1 test and wait 2 years. I don't believe for a second that the knock on consequences of this legislation weren't obvious to the EU. They don't want people on bikes. Bikes are bad for KSI statistics.
  2. No, he'll be limited to 15bhp 125cc. AFTER passing his A1 test. Then wait MINIMUM 2 years before the A2 47hp test can be taken... Take the test now on a 125,
  3. they are still finalising the rules, so details may yet change, but I would think if you wanted to go up to 47bhp you'd have to take extra training or a test, by the sounds of it. Would it be worth it for the sake of a year or so? Unfortunately they aren't 'finalising' it, it's not going to change now. The real time to stop this was back in 2006 when the law was originally (and quietly) passed. Now though, its the other extreme, there is absolutely no way to stop it. You have to take an extra test to get an A2 47bhp licence, and it must be 2 years after you've already taken the A1 test. Thing is, taking the A1 test is pointless, it gets you nothing of consequence in the short term (merely motorway and pillion provisions), as you can ride the same bikes on L-plates as you can after passing your (A1) test! Oh, and don't forget that "A3" test 2 years after that, to get a proper full bike licence. I see hordes more undertrained L-platers, and less real bikers. For that reason, i'm out.
  4. In direct answer to the OP: motorbikealarm.co.uk/node/25 That. There is also a v2 that's easier to fit. Does far more than remote start, but does a good job for the price!
  5. I'd use any semi-synthetic car oil of the right viscosity, Castrol Magnatec aside. For the average (non-race) bike, anyway. I would never neglect the service intervals for oil (and filter) though. Ever.
  6. Haynes Motorcycle Basics Techbook.
  7. There are also "fully legitimate" organisations against it too. e.g. I imagine the Electronic Frontier Foundation, for one. Aaron's said it all imo, much more eloquently than i could have put it myself.
  8. I on the other hand, am interested because SOPA is almost certain to result in legitimate websites and services being taken down without notice, causing the companies to go bust and generally screwing up the way the internet is supposed to work. Don't like whst your competitor is doing? Then use SOPA to get their website taken down for a few days and lose them a chunk of market share. How? Because there's no trial or hearing, merely an allegation that gets acted on without any further thought of the consequences. Thank god that there are at least one group of people who aren't willing to roll over and take it.

    33bhp Restriction

I'll just leave this here http://www.themotorbikeforum.co.uk/view ... 27&t=23787 And this (the actual wording of the law in which the 25kW power restriction is set) http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1999/uksi_19992864_en.pdf And this http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/News/ ... e-rip-off/
  10. Whilst i think i know what you're trying to get at, i kinda thought that was the whole point of opening and running a shop I don't agree with what's happened if it's been advertised as an offer because it could reasonably have been expected there would be no stock left for customers as the staff would take them (even if just to eBay them off) - ergo its secretly an employee perk. Not reasonable to pull customers in under false pretenses - this is probably covered under advertising rules, and if not, it should be. Putting the shoe on the other foot though, it'd irritate me as an employee if i was told i couldn't have one/put one aside, as it makes you feel unloved 2 solutions are not to advertise it if it's going to end up as an employee perk, or stock a sufficient quantity (more than 5!) and ensure safeguards are in place to keep the staff from having them all (e.g. maximum of 1 per member of staff).
  11. No, it just cuts out. It maybe down to me getting lazy and jet washing the bike at work a few days ago as it was so covered in crud, especially where the side stand is As soon as I get home I'll check it. Side stand switch.
  12. Jet needle having fell down into the body of the carb. Ask me how i know It didn't just happen once...
  13. This. Unless you are happy to cut your losses the second reliability issues start (which could be immediate) and sell on the parts / get another one and keep it for spares. Even that most solid of newbie twins, the CB500, can be thoroughly shagged out at just 45K. Ask me how i know For god's sake don't keep sinking money into it. It'll potentially eat thousands of pounds of parts, and still be unreliable!
  14. Glad to hear 3 have sorted their game out. Must say that between the time i worked for them (2008/2009) and now (i'm still a customer today) i have noticed more and more reports of good customer service and more people actually on the network. They certainly have seemed to turn the Mumbai call centres around fast, as they were the point of failure whilst i was with them.
  15. You have it nearly spot on I was considering Wii Fit, but dropped it for this very reason. That and how bloody expensive it is
  16. Got her a new black one with wii sports and wii sports resort, as well as a total of 2 nunchuks, 2 controllers, and 2 motionplus(es). Cost me ~£113 after cashback all in. This thing better be good

  18. As my girlfriend's been bugging me about having one for a couple of years i've decided she really does want one and so should get her one for Xmas. Thing is as a PC man i'm not really up on consoles (the last one i had was the original Xbox), so i don't know where to get one without paying through the nose, and i've no idea what "deals"/accessories to go for (i'm aware you can get potentially it cheaper with the console, although i'm also thinking i may be able to acquire 2nd via eBay some of the accessories cheaper and she'll never know ). Anyone here a bit more "up" on it able to tell me what i should be buying?
  19. There is if you want to use engine braking to lose speed. Have also been told you'll have less stablity with the clutch in (would quite like someone to confirm that though as i can't work the physics of it out).
  20. Really couldnt disagree more unless you actually get worse as you get more experianced and confident I think some people do get worse over time yes, they pick up bad habits and get distracted easier and loose concentration more often either through being on sort of auto-pilot where you just do it (like with breathing) and dont concentrate, or because of distractions or because of old age. I think people take bigger risks when they have been driving for longer too Have you seen the accident statistics? The last ones i saw strongly suggested higher accident risk in younger and older (as in elderly) years, with a good reduction in between - Suggesting to me that those in their middle ages are statistically the safest drivers. Insurance also backs this up with cheaper premiums!

    MOT Fail

I knew it was coming, but didn't quite suspect so many good reasons for it Sidelamp wasn't fitted (i'd already bought new cable and scotch-locks with which to replace the part of the wiring loom that's missing so i can fit it and plug it into the cabling that goes to the tail lamp as it's powered by the same wire - simply ran out of time). Front brake disc has little cracks in it. I honestly thought they were just marks, didn't realise they actually go right through the disc! (Easy job for me to replace the disc with the one from my old CB.) Chain was missing a split link (the bit that holds the pins in...) . I thought the joining link looked a little odd, but i had no idea that was missing! I'd also routed the brake hose in such a way that full-lock steering was compressing it (i knew it was wrong, but didn't realise it would foul the steering). And had failed to tighten the top nut of the steering stem. You know, that little bit that holds the front end together On the advisory side: Shiny Hagon rear shock had also previously weeped some oil. And i'd left the headbearings a little too loose on re-fitting, so there was some play (apparently i should be feeling some friction on them when they're properly adjusted with the front end off) So err... that went well Anyway, the chain... says SBZ on it apparently. Yet i have no idea which manufacturer that is, and google isn't helping (anyone recognise it?). I'll be wanting a proper preened over link, split links are meant to be a very bad idea on bigger bikes. (There's lots of life left in the chain itself). I've got a replacement chain and sprockets - just don't fancy using it up until i have to.
  22. As the user of cheap suspension (i.e. preload adjustment only), i can tell you that if you shorten the spring via the preload adjuster it will be less bouncy, but bottom-out easier.
  23. I'm afraid i would have to laugh at you In all seriousness scooters have their place - just not in my garage
