    Overheated?

Earliest I could have got it to dealer would be tomorrow (dealer closed Sunday and Monday) and would need to have to take a day off work as leave 4am and don't get in till 8pm. Then rest of the week I'd need to drive costing me £6 a day parking. So rather than just leave it sitting there till i can get it to dealer I'd rather try and fix it. Anyway the problem is the HT lead, the rubber boot seems to have overheated and subsequently not insulating as good as it should be, i've encased it in insulating tape for now and seems to be holding up so can continue using for this week and book it in to dealer Saturday to get lead replaced.

    Overheated?

Really thinking I shouldn't have taken Chinese gamble Well spent day ripping bike apart... Carb is clean and working smoothly nothing blocked and plenty of liquid fuel getting to carb so definitely not vapour lock. Goes through 3 stages... Cold - runs perfect Warm - idles perfectly can't rev without bogging down but if done slowly until about 1500rpm will rev fine very difficult to restart Hot - won't even idle and impossible to start Noticed there seems to be a short with HT lead and it's sparking to engine case, not sure if that is cause as it don't seem to mimick running... E.g. Runs fine sparking and when not and likewise stalls sparking or not... That's not to say when not sparking it's not shorting somewhere i can't see spark The lead seems to be one piece with coil, is this correct? Don't want to pull to hard in case it is and i rip it out by gentle tug and it don't budge

    Overheated?

Just had a try and thankfully it is easily replicated... Started on the button from cold, and ran fine, put the choke on to bump up the revs and left it idling for a few mins ~2k RPM, flicked the choke off and it idled fine but as soon as tried to open throttle it just bogged down and stalled, restarted ok a few times though and would rev if throttle was turned about as quickly as the hour hand goes round a clock, any faster (even slower than "normal" acceleration) just caused it to bog down and stall. After another minute or so it just refused to restart. The engine was untouchable but the carb and fuel lines were still totally cold. I also tried with fuel cap open to ensure not venting issue - no difference. The fuel lines do not go close to the head and reading about vapour lock many seem to be under impression that gravity fed systems should not suffer from it? Spoke to dealer... they can collect (at a fee!) but earliest they can look at bike is Wednesday (closed Sun/Mon) and cannot provide loan bike... I need it for work on Tuesday (well tbh I could take car for a few days but besides point).

    Overheated?

Cheers read up and does sound like most likely issue, just the job of getting it back to dealer now if it's going to be regular problem or worse case is its absolutely fine taking it to them.
  5. As a newbie myself will emphasise what others have said about road position riding center / slightly right drastically cuts down the twats, still get odd one or two but less than riding in gutter. As for camera always had a helmet mount and it's not the most discrete / aerodynamic and never caused any issues I've noticed did think about mounting on bike instead but problem with that (and chest mount) is it don't show where you're looking. Also found that regardless of speed limit and being bang on said limit being on L plates seems to make drivers want to overtake you, I am at stage now I don't care and just hold my position but just be prepared if they are going to be really stupid.

    Overheated?

Coming home today and approach my turn off from main road and as i put clutch in and changed down bike stalled, coast round corner trying to restart and just point blank wouldn't start, manage to coast it the rest of way home. Tried few more times with and without choke, throttle open a bit etc... Just could not get it to restart. Engine was very hot to the touch but air cooled so couldn't say if normal or not... Never really checked lol Left it for about half hour and then started first time but very rough idle and would only rev of throttle turned really slow (once past 1k would rev happily) but before then turning throttle any faster it would just bog down and stall. Know that's fairly normal carb behaviour but know how fast can turn throttle when cold, this needed far slower turn than that and engine was still warm. Could this be overheating issue? Was thinking fuel first but the fact it restarted after a while without touching anything when I'd tried loads before is bit baffling. If overheating then tbh no reason why it should have as was 3 mile journey with no traffic and only stopped once so plenty of air flow and was much cooler than earlier in week doing same journey. Only 330 miles on clock so still under warranty but rather sort it myself if as can't be without it.
  7. Is it possible to do a mod1 on your own bike without going via a school, know the mod2 would be more of an issue with insurance etc... But as mod1 off road is this possible? (obviously bike will be ridden there by a licensed insured rider)

    Clutch pull

Total newbie to riding and just purchased a Sinnis max 2 (new) On delivery clutch was really tough so thought yesterday would do my first bit of maintenance, oiled all the cable and set about adjusting as biting point was at about 80% release of lever wanted it a bit closer this is where problems started, slaked cable off a bit and sure enough too much and stalled as soon as I put it in gear so tightened up same result so tighten a bit more and repeat... Clutch would just not disengage I ended up with a clutch cable as tight as a guitar string! Then as im running out of room on adjuster put it in gear and had an initial drop as if it was going to stall but it recovered, let out clutch and sure enough no bite at all now... So slackened cable again and ended up right back where I first started (when slackened off) and now have a decent biting point but all through adjustment I get bike wanting to pull with clutch fully in, this happens even when it's tightened too much to bite that rear wheel off the ground and clutch fully in wheel will spin, I can stop with my hand but has to be firm and can feel it wanting to pull, yet same time on the bike and clutch fully released there isn't enough bite to move bike. How I've got it now is small amount of slack on cable fully released, starts to bite around 50% released but fully in while bike will idle it wants to move, sitting on bike is enough to stop it actually moving but with no weight on bike standing next to it in gear and clutch in it creeps forward. So few questions. 1, is it just normal? I'm comparing against cars as that's all I know do bikes always have a bit of clutch drag? 2, is it just because it's new? Only got about 20 miles on it so far so nowhere near run in 3, or is it a problem that I should be taking it back early to be looked at? Also unknown if related but really struggle to find neutral with engine running, end up flicking between 1st / 2nd no matter how gentle I am yet with engine off get it there first time 90% of attempts Being new to riding I am struggling at times balancing clutch etc... And accept a lot of it is practice but don't want my learning hampered by a faulty bike yet at same time if it is just me or just need to get some more miles on bike then I'll just keep on at it
  9. He did let him practice while we were out on the road as he did me last week but I'd say when I last see him he was struggling more than I did last week, instructor was on fence for a bit but then said no as he was struggling to make a turn in one go as he was coming off throttle far too much as he turned so ended up stopping half way into turn. As with me last week struggling to get clutch control on a turn the biggest worry for him is if it happens on the road what was a nice big gap to pull out into suddenly turns into a car bearing down on someone who is struggling as it is. Yeah I am glad I didn't panic, never grabbed front brake once all day (which I did a couple of times last week) I know I was fine in the 'controlled stop' and nailed it each time it is still different when you know what is coming. When I did my first CBT about 13 years ago I was on a ped and had someone pull out on me and did exactly that, ended up fishtailing down the road and only reason I didn't come off was because I was too scared too lol. But unfortunately I can't change drivers attitude only mine in reaction to it and that ended up a huge confidence boost even if I do need new trousers TBH I was exactly same when learning to drive couldn't take hand off wheel to do up window, now likewise it just comes naturally although round here will probably be different gestures to the kids One other thing I found so different on the road was lifesavers, did try and get some practice in off the road and was such a struggle keeping bike straight either drifting way I was looking or drifting the opposite way (think I was trying to compensate) but on the road felt much more natural
  10. Well went back today, what a difference a week makes! This time had 2 younger people there, one on a ped and one on a geared and an older guy on a ped. The two on peds had never ridden before and the guy on geared had only ridden a ped before. So from being the most useless suddenly I am top of class and being asked to demonstrate all the maneuvers to the others. Off the road section went fine nothing really to note, the older guy on ped struggled a lot (nearly went into same bush as me last week) so never made the road test. As 3 of us and one instructor he split road test into two sections as a rotation so we all went on the road twice. At this point the other one on geared decided he was going to take ped for road so I was only one on a geared and went out on the first two rotations. Much nicer on the road, lots more space, didn't go perfect but well enough, had a couple of stalls pulling away especially on 'hill starts' balancing clutch, throttle and now rear brake took its time but sure it will come with practice. Then on last run we come up to large roundabout turning right onto dual carriageway... guy on ped in the lead, instructor in the middle, me behind... now we are all reasonable distance apart no huge gaps, as we are coming off do my left lifesaver and sure enough a car besides me creeping up so glad that I didn't forget, its dual carriageway so I stay to go in right hand lane about a cars length behind instructor at this point... all of a sudden a car shoots out of turning before ours, right in-between me and the instructor... have to say though handled it perfectly just a touch of rear brake enough for them to get out the way (they proceeded to then cut up other cars and turn right... they were in left hand turn lane to begin with!) and a nice blast of the horn to censor any swear words and continue on. Have to say so much more relaxed this time, hands and arms don't ache half as much so was obviously much more relaxed. Although did ride with visor up as was such a lovely day which was fine till a bit of country road and got pieces of tree flying into face, but grinned and bared it as no way was I letting go to put visor down.
  11. Just got home from my CBT... Turn up and there are two others on the course for today, at 35 I was pleasantly surprised I was the youngest there, no 16 year olds on peds in sight. One is on his own 125 scooter that he rode in, he is a regular face and comes back every 2 years to re-do his as he doesn't want to do his test, the other is on a geared and used to ride 20 years ago and wants to get back into it so I am the only fresh learner that's never been on a geared bike, but hey I can drive, how bad can it be? (I will skip talking about all the standard talks, controls, etc... and jump straight to riding section) We line up, in a large private car park belonging to the centre, and need to do a large oval, I am the first told set off so off I go (without stalling!) get to where I need to turn and manage about 150 degrees of the required 180 before I notice a nice bush that I become fixated with, mount the kerb and manage to stop just millimeters away from said bush. At this point I am now thinking what am I doing! After a quick chat about looking where I want to go I set off again and this time no more problems and can now drive in nice big ovals. Next up is figure 8's which I was extremely nervous about, but done one that whilst it could be seen from the international space station was acceptable for them, then some more ovals this time going up to 2nd on first straight, turning keeping it in 2nd for the turn and then up to 3rd in next straight before going back down to 1st for the opposite turn. I was 'OK' and nothing really of note with that. Next up "controlled stop" (apparently no longer called emergency stop) and absolutely nailed it, spot on no issues and tester even asked if I had switched places with a twin brother since I first started! Then came the junction work... two fake junctions on each end of the oval, one an exit from a main road into a side street where for the exercise it will be clear (e.g. go through the motions of indicators, looking, etc...) then a slow turn all the way round and back up to other end of course where the 2nd junction is a side road onto main road which will not be clear (e.g. come to complete stop, then set off again once clear). This is about the time when brain decided to just shut down and it went terrible. The "clear" junction was 'ok' but bouncy, doing indicators, checks, etc... I just could not get clutch control right. The junction where I had to stop was worse. I just could not get going again and stalled every single time, often two/three times and ended up hopping bike round. After this was meant to be road briefing and road side of CBT this is where I was asked if I was feeling confident to go on road, I said I would like to practice that more and was promptly told that he needs to take others on the road and he cannot leave me unattended on a CBT so that was it my CBT was over! I was gutted... but... he then turns round and says that he don't often do this but as I have now been kicked off the CBT he is going to lend me one of his bikes to ride around on his land as long as I am sensible etc... I stuck around for road briefing anyway, then they all left to hit the road and I am alone in a nice big car park. Well they were gone for what seemed like hours and the practice I got on my own was worth the cost of CBT alone, I practiced the pulling away and my figure 8's which was on advice of the instructor as it was my clutch control needing the work, without the pressure of anyone looking at me it came together nicely I built up a lot of confidence with the bike where before I would be scared to put foot up at anything below the speed of sound I was poodling along at walking speed with my foot up as soon as bike was moving, I got figure of 8's tighter than I ever thought I would be able to do with bike on full lock with my foot up and at a nice slow speed, clutch control improved drastically and by the time they got back I was right up with my confidence level. Obviously still come away without CBT and need to re-book but going to get that ASAP tbh if he had left it at kicking me off and I had to go after that I probably would have 2nd thoughts about going back but that extra time gave me a huge confidence boost and absolutely top notch instructor!
  12. 100% agree... I'm slightly older but technically dangerous for me as well with new laws I wanted to do progressive access as I don't trust myself to not buy something stupidly fast so being restricted for two years would have been perfect. Now it does not make financial sense to do this as I would need to keep doing tests etc... So only financially sensible route is direct access
  13. Cheers for replies, well cbt and ride for a bit definitely first step, think only sensible option is full licence though as any other route just means paying for multiple lessons and tests, will see if there are any local "by the hour" places all I've seen so far is bulk bookings and there's a massive difference between £160 for a day or £800 for 5
  14. Firstly I am a "mature" driver starting out in biking, I am 35 and have been driving for 13 years now. Aprox. 12+ years ago I did a CBT (hadn't been driving for more than 6 months) but never got on bike again (got offered CBT through work for free and thought why not - didn't like riding a bike at the time though so never got on one again). Now fast forwarding to today I really want to ride, have a lot of friends and family whom are bikers and want to get on a bike myself, I am sure the dislike from previous was being new to the road + totally new to bikes was just a lot off stress. When I first got in a car I hated it, did my 10 paid for lessons at 17 and never got back behind a wheel until I was 22 but now love it. So I have my CBT booked for just over a week away and been looking at all the new licence changes... Now I am totally stumped! As I cant see any way of getting on a decent size bike without paying a fortune. Old style (pre 2013?) progressive access I could pass my test on a small bike and just be patient and rack up some experience eventually I would get on something bigger. But now to get even an A2 licence I would need to pass a test on a bike I cannot legally ride as a learner. So how do I even get on a larger bike to get experience? Other than going on a course which cost a fortune lump sum. Or alternatively find a bike to borrow (feasible as previously stated do have friends and family with bikes) and a bit of private land (harder as I am not trying to get off road experience)... and even after that would I even get insurance on a bike I cant legally ride to then do the test? And would I then have to push the bike all the way to the test centre as I can't ride it on the road. Totally flummoxed as to what to do, even though I am forward thinking at the moment as first plan is to get at least 9-12 months experience just riding on my CBT.
