  1. could I have buggered the timing up by doing the tappets?

Not ignition timing but valve timing yes .. if they are too tight (small) clearance then the valve will open too early and close later ...

So on its firing stage ( intake compression firing exhaust) of a 4 stroke the exhaust valve may be opening

And if too large then the valves will open later and close too soon .... causing compression at wrong time

  2. Is this with the bikes rear wheel off the ground that it's spinning ?

It's not just the clutch idling as no load on wheel that make you think it's still engaged

Have you tried wheel on ground and clutch pulled in ?

  3. Does it attemp to start ... youve not trapped fuel line on tank removal/replace ?

    Turned fuel tap on ?

Best thing to do is go backwards in your exploits

    Take tank off

    look for detached leads

Check the plug that possibly plugs into the solenoid isn't corroded on contacts .

    Check fuses

  4. Going by the details given of your eBay search

    My starter ....

  6. Ok ... is the engine seized?

    If a geared bike

Get sufficent room ...on a level non slippery surface

Engage top gear ( ignition off for now )

    Pull clutch in

Run beside it and release clutch and see if the bike will turn the rear wheel ( it may slide a bit but should turn with enough pace )

    Basically bump starting the bike

Or if a helper available one sits on bike and does clutch etc whilst other pushes

Just to see if everything turns as it should .

  7. Why replace battery ( what was the issue before ?)

Not seen video but could be a knackered starter motor shorting to earth ...

You could try finding the starter solenoid and bridging the two large cable connections on it with a screwdriver BRIEFLY to see if the starter turns THIS DOES CAUSE SPARKING AND GETS HOT just to see if it is starter related or solenoid issue THIS IS AT YOUR OWN RISK AND I ACCEPT NO LIABILITY .

  8. Currently hold Silver Rospa ....

And looking into local Iam group for more social side of things

Both work from roadcraft with minor differences in their execution .

Main difference at present is as mentioned

IAMroadsmart as long as you pay your yearly subs your an advanced rider

Rospa.. every three years you must take a retest as well as paying your annual dues to keep your advanced status. . (Better in my opinion )

I undertook no formal training for my Rospa apart from completeing 2 bikesafe courses and the DSA enhanced riders scheme .

Applied for the Rospa Test and achieved Silver .Just recently had my compulsory 3 yr test and achieved Silver again.

Regarding if it makes you safer ... it depends on how you apply it.

Regarding riding with others if your riding with a mixed bag of riders then the risk is higher due to varying styles ,but if for instance riding with a group of similar matched rider styles ( eg advanced group rides) then it reduces the group risk as all working on same principles.

  9. Ok (weather dependant )

Am going for a blast out tomorrow for a few hours from H Cafe
