  1. I've been practicing Us and 8s a lot lately. On a 125 you have the additional problem of a high revving engine that dies as soon as you release the clutch. I developed a "pulsing" technique with the clutch. It keeps the hand fluid with really small/ gentle movements. With a constant clutch setting it starts to grab a little more as up pick up speed, the bike accelerates more etc. If you are pulsing, you are already pulling the clutch back as it bites, so you don't get into a vicious cycle. No jerkiness. The frequency is the same - about 3-4 times a second, but the amount of time at the bite point varies. Its difficult to explain. In electronics its called "pulse width modulation". Anyway I spent 2 hours at it and transferred to a 650cc. My tyre tracks on a 5 x figure 8 were within 50cm, and I passed my Mod1 with it today so ....
  2. Passed Mod 1 with one minor. Slight rear lock up on the emergency stop. I also would have marked myself down for getting out of shape on the exit of the swerve. You have to slow down and turn at the same time. He didn't mention it but I felt it. The only thing that struck me was going around the big curve on the run up. I never had a curve with cones before. Always a straight run up in practice. Don't look at the cones!!!!
  3. so: I'm in a right hand turn, under low power What did I instinctively do?
  4. I was out practicing slow speed riding in the wet, around small roads in a semi pedestrianized housing estate. I turned a corner. I might have gone over a metal manhole cover. Anyway, the back went out. I stayed shiny side up but I have to wonder:- what are you supposed to do when the back tire slips? In a car you turn into the skid and keep a little power on, but I've never heard it discussed for bikes.
  5. My Mod1 is on Tuesday and I already hate it. If I get through, my mod 2 is in a couple of weeks. Sorry to Hear that the CBR125 is sitting unridden. Perhaps though, you could practice "correctness" and technique on that rather than not riding at all. There is no substitute for seat time. You're one up on me though. I'll be out today doing figure 8s around tennis balls!
  6. Plus it confuses Americans. Just like gun control and Trump .... and commas.
  7. Well done! Mind if I ask how much 22 hours cost? I've been booking 2 hour sessions and it just takes soooo long! 2 2hr lessons to go until Mod 1 It will probably work out at 14hours in total plus the tests. I have a 125 to practice on but I wish that I'd just booked the time and got it done.
  8. Emmm. How do you slip the clutch on a figure of 8 or or a U turn with an automatic? Wait! I'm serious. Don't you end up going too fast?
  9. My GT Air is my first helmet in 30 years! I agree about the breath guard but for a different reason. My tinted visor mists up in the cold, because? ...... the breath guard doesn't go anywhere near my face so my hot breath just goes onto the visor - even with the main visor cracked open. What they need is a couple of breath guard options. I wish that the visor opening tab was at the bottom instead of the side so that the visor didn't twist when yo try to open it, but that's not limited to Shoei.
  10. I'm not kidding about this. On my CBT course there was a 16year old kid on his second CBT still struggling to master a scooter. I asked if he had a bike and he said "somewhere". His problem was .... ALL OF IT!!!! My suggestion to anyone starting to ride is to master:- balance, steering, positioning, traffic awareness, and lifesavers on a motorbike without a motor. The skills are the same - especially on a road /cyclocross bike where you are angled forwards. Its like the biplane of fighter pilot school. You get to isolate the skills that you are learning. If you can't perform a figure 8 on a bicycle ...... OK, so at MY CBT I needed to unlearn my left hand brake, but that went away by the next time I sat on a bike (brain reboot). Now as I ride my 125 300 miles a week and work towards my DAS I have a new set of problems:- visor fog, autumn road krap, doing it all in full body armor.... in the dark. At least I can work on my slow speed clutch control with a sense of balance, and I'm not scared of traffic. But don't let that stop you booking your CBT. Just add this ..... If you want. P.S. horror thought:- I wonder if they will extent CBT to electric bicycles
  11. The width of a Mod 1 U-turn. Its also the width of 3 UK standard parking spaces. I went out and measured my nearest car park and looked it up on google. Officially a standard space is 2.4m but measured mine at 2.5m. Its a useful fact if you are working on your Mod1. Just thought I'd mention it.
  12. Its that time of year. It was 6°C and foggy yesterday morning, so wet visor = wet gloves. After an hour I arrived at the office and my fingertips actually hurt. So that's as low as Richa Peak goes. What's next?
  13. I suppose the warranted might cover it but its not a fault of a manufacturing defect. Polyester fabric is permeable. Areas that funnel and trap water let it in. Its the design. It should have water resistant fabric and drains.
  14. Have you read this: https://www.rideapart.com/articles/255770/ask-a-motorcycle-thief/ ? From what I have read, buy lots of small noisy things. Its take more time than say, freezing and smashing a single chain. I would like to chain it but there isn't always something to chain it to. I have a Datatool S4red and a motion sensitive disk lock..... and a chain and a dlock Pick on someone else's bike.
  15. http://www.frank-thomas.co.uk/index.php/collection/textiles/lisbo-jacket-black-yellow.html Lisbo Jacket Black yellow. http://www.frank-thomas.co.uk/index.php/collection/textiles/frank-thomas-reflector-pants-black.html Frank Thomas Reflector Pants Black Both advertised as "waterproof" (not "Shower proof") It took a while to figure out where the water gets in. The zips on the cuffs and the fly have fabric gussets behind them. I don't expect a zip or velcro to stop water but a would have expected the gusset to be water resistant. Its just wet polyester. In the case of the trousers it works like a funnel. Now it looks like I pissed myself. I've had them 2 months so too late to take them back. I foresee a mod. I don't know what yet. Frank Thomas does not have a Customer comments or reviews section but they have an: "any questions about buying" section in their contact page. I copied this post into that box. If they reply, I'll let you know.
  16. I also have a CBR125R . I do a 35 mile commute (not every day). It is under powered for dual carriage ways but 50MPH is comfortable. Yes, it boring, but ALL dual carriageways are boring. I can't believe that you can pass one test and ride an unlimited bike on lessons alone. I got my CBT a couple of months ago and I'm 1000 miles in. I know that my riding has improved in that time. I've made mistakes but I'm not dead which is a plus. 1000cc would have been far riskier. Passed my theory this week and first big boy bike lesson tomorrow..... with the 125 to practice on.
  17. Winter is coming (if that matters) what do you folks recommend? Having crossed over from pedal cycling I'm surprised that it isn't considered a big deal by motorcyclists. Those guys are always on about how many watts are lost in a chain at 30MPH, cleaning and which lube. Surly the potential losses are much greater on a motorcycle with greater speeds and miles.
  18. How much can you over click a hazard? the trouble is as overs have said, When you have been driving for decades you see hazards far earlier. Can you say click (say) once a second?
  19. I once had my spares philosophy changed when a colleague found me pouring my petrol into my car. "yeah I carry spare fuel too. I keep it in the tank!" If you need a spare battery its because you have a battery problem or a charging problem (sounds like it might be OVER charging and cooking the cells). Fix the busted thing. You won't have the spare with you when you need it.
  20. Is an alarm really Thatcham approved if its not fitted by a Thatcham approved installer? I have one on order but the Dealer is really busy and far away. I'm busy too so we have a scheduling problem. However there is local "go to" mechanic who fits alarms but doesn't want the hassle of buying them (Its a core strengths thing). So if its fitted by him, is it still approved? (and how would anyone tell anyway?). Yes I know there are mobile fitters but I've already ordered now.
  21. I've been to the local outdoor shop today. For new boots there is a Nikwax that softens and water proofs. For older boots there is one that restored and water proofs. Its pretty easy to get hold of. Probably Millets and Cotswold.
  22. What actually is the best deterrent? An alarm immobilizer makes it harder to steal and more obvious, but who tackles thieves with hammers these days? A tracker lets you know where your shit went but are you going to storm the lion's den to get it back? The Police will take their time and by then the lion has dis-resembled your pride and joy (and defeated you tracker in comfort). Ok, BOTH is even better but that could cost more than the bike. Opinions? What do thieves actually think?
