giving my phone the finger.
Pbassred replied to Pbassred's topic in Clothing, Luggage, Accessories and Security
I got a bunch of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/LAAT-Lightweight-Fashion-Stylus-Capacitive/dp/B071ZPMRML/ref=pd_vtph_lp_img_3/259-7521704-2739806?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B071ZPMRML&pd_rd_r=87d5075e-6f76-11e9-b7ed-b1ecbd8ebec9&pd_rd_w=cLE28&pd_rd_wg=JnQrB&pf_rd_p=eb02db1b-a172-4b0e-887c-299e5e502bb0&pf_rd_r=75X35EFN3NME5YZ4JBGT&psc=1&refRID=75X35EFN3NME5YZ4JBGT On Ebay. I also learned to voice dial from my Cardo and then that the "phone" symbol cancels the call. I still need to use the stylus (and pull over) to change albums though. -
I see a lot of videos where they say to warm up the bike before draining the oil. I don't get it. It makes the oil drain out quicker? yes, but not much. lets the dirt fall down quicker? if its a cold bike, its already at the bottom. If I start the bike it all goes to the top again. so.......

I was in the same position as you. Tried a 35 mile commute on a 125, did my DAS and DIDN'T buy a big bike. I bought an A2 CBR500R. Its still big enough to loose your license with and big enough to crash BUT corners are corners. Experience is experience. The ragged edge is slightly (but not that much) less dangerous. I get 73 MPG (genuine). Sure, I go to the ACE café and feel a little intimidated. There are times when a 100HP bike blasts me. Because of the licensing laws 600CC is seen as a minimum these days, but who actually needs that except for bragging rights, or that power that you can't legally sustain for more than 3 seconds? If you're getting a 600cc bike get an older one on a private sale because you WILL drop it. you're a beginner. its understood.

Why do Riders take so long to put their feet on the pegs after the start? They look like pizza delivery scooters. I'm sure they know what they are doing but I cant see the advantage. Surly there is less control and more air resistance?

@ fastbob, Will ordinary LEDs replace the standard bulbs on a CBR? Does it throw up a CANBUS error? or do I need to find CANBUS versions? I worry that those run hot.
-
Yeah. Its starting to gel into: Change to a really long life Halogen (who knows what Original equipment was) and then wire in some LEDs as a plan B. I was already working on some LED strips to increase visibility.
-
I'm sure that this has been asked many times but since "LED" is too few characters search, I can't. I'm including the words "light emmitting diode" for the the next guy. I haven't attempted to change a light bulb on my CBR yet but acording to the manual it requires removing the fairing! That means that if I have a bulb failure at night (like on my commute), I'm sidlined. Reliability is everything. I thought about simply changing the bulb routinely after a certain number of hours, say 500 hours at average 40mph = 20,000 miles, but its stil not a guarantee. Does anyone have experience of LEDs? They look bulky.

I had a shift in thinking when I suffered a puncture at work. Without a repair kit I couldn't go anywhere and needed to get a ride to a train station and plan the repair later. Ok, I can cover a flat tire, but there are many things that can go wrong. On a commute you're stuck and on your own. SO I looked at breakdown cover and there is a big difference in price. for the same thing. Honda CBR500R 6 call-outs per year, £30 excess, 2 Gether - £35 Green Flag - £47 Does anyone have experience in this or what to look out for?
-
My CBR125R needs to go. Should I sell now or wait for better weather?

Today I was in fuel save mode:- slightly aero tuck and backed off to 60 - 65 (because .... I dunno). However you see more bikes that way. A couple went past and waved their hand and then this one guy goes past and dangles his leg about 30mm off the ground. What?

I'm not talking about tesxing and riding. Only things like scrolling a map or hanging up a call I can't make cardo/google do that.). Besides, Even if you pull over you still need to take your glove off, press the button and then put the glove back on and re-seal the cuff around it. so the question still stands. -
Motor cycle gloves don't work with phones. Gloves that work with touch screens exist but what I have seen is complete gloves - i.e. not motorcycle gloves. I have also seen styli but they are short and stubby and where would you store then during a ride? Has anyone else cracked this problem?

Radio, but with requirements

For the record …. (and I might do a user review later). The question about how to make voice work, is interesting. They make a lot of the "Hey Cardo/Siri/Google but it doesn't always work. Since I regularly us voice dialing via Bluetooth in my car, I have been trying to figure it out. The trick is to NOT lock your phone! Obviously leaving the screen on is a problem when you put it in your pocket, and it locks automatically anyway , but there is a solution …. for android anyway. Android has "Trusted Devices. I'm using 8.0 so:- go into the settings menu, find "Lock screen" / "smart lock" and in there is "Trusted Devices". Select your Cardo and you're good. It keeps the phone unlocked while you Cardo is connected even when the screen is off. The trick is still to NOT lock your phone manually. i.e. don't press the screen off button because that locks it too. Instead, let it time out. PS the manual is rubbish and the cardo community is not a user forum so you can't ask how to do stuff. -
Before xmas I bought a used bike from Vertu Grantham Honda. I got the service book. It has the previous owner's address in it, so its NOT policy. By the way: IS there a national Honda dealership? or is it franchises? I know that Grantham has no commercial link to Letchworth because they are completely separate companies, so how can there be a "national policy"? GDPR is about computer data held for marketing purposes. It has nothing to do with personal anonymity. In fact. The company storing all those service books is more illegal than an individual having a single address. This reminds me of the "Data protection act" from the 1980s that was misused all the time that a company didn't want to tell you something. The book belongs to the owner as a history record. An unverifiable recreation of a record is essentially worthless.

The thing is:- If I am driving and I get a puncture I don't want a rapid flat at 80MPH. Slime could prevent that. Not in major cases but they are going to kill your tire anyway. I recently had a puncture at work and used the rubber worm method. Its ok but its not as quick and its only temporary. When I went to have the tire replaced ( I was going to anyway) I asked if it was worth repairing. The guy said that he doesn't usually get a good result over a big worm hole. Anyway the big reamer tears a hole in your tyre and that could include the steel bracing wires so you don't want it back.

My wife recently got bike insurance for the first time. She had difficulty because of a previous car accident. Even though it wasn't her fault and the other company paid up they still gave her grief over it. My advice would be to keep a record of dates, costs, everything for at last 5 years, because they are going to ask it. Also ask your own insurance company if this will affect your next premium. Ask another company too. and make sure you claim for that cost.

Yes, technology threads move on, but its worthwhile to review against old expectations. I installed Cardo Pactalk slims in his and hers GT-air lids. They work faultlessly together. The voice command works with itself and also "hey google" (as long as google behaves). The only thing that did that was contrary to the instructions was to offset the mic about 30mm off-centre to stop "popping". That said, When the missus breaths hard, it comes through. -
Or so I'm told. True or false? Evidence? It doesn't in cycling or you would think that lightweight bikes with a 27 inch wheel would shimmy.

Opinions on leaving your helmet locked on your bike

The Road Traffic Act - a salutory lesson!

Thank you for bringing this up. My 125 has been in the shed since I passed my test. I need to get on to the DVLA site. -
something with a tall screen. I do 40 each way on a CBR500R. There's a lot of wind noise/buffeting on the helmet.
-
You can't really second guess this. It doesn't sound like the reporter actually went there ..... or spoke to someone who went there. Its sad but if you consider how many people take their test every year its still very rare.
-
here's a scenario; Water gets into ignition system. Causes short circuit that makes the whole ignition system weak/intermittent. The additional current draw through the circuit causes it to overheat and melt. Second scenario: you keep using apostrophes on plurals and the apostrophe mafia puts out a contract on you. There's is a tough life.

Yes but next year you will have 1 year's experience and 30% no claims discount. I don't know how old you are but another year might help too. Buying a 650cc isn't mandatory. You could still buy an A2 bike. Not as much kudos but even a 300cc puts you on motorways with a small reserve of power. I bought a CBR500R. Its fine for the next 5 - 10,000 miles of experience.

Ha Ha! Parallel universe. Unsold CBR125 and a CBR500 in the courtyard/utility space and the wife took delivery of her 125 yesterday so I was outside laying patio slabs. I work for a company with an abundance of stainless steel so I cast a huge reinforced concrete block around some rings of it.
