Might be an electrical fault, which can be a ****** to find.
+1 Running a weak battery can cause reg/rectifier failures, which left can lead to cdi failures on some Suzuki's. Check the plugs/leads and then get some fresh petrol through the carbs first before you do anything else. There coulkd be some stale petrol thats gone waxy in them that needs clearing.
-
As Colin said really, keep it clean, I always bypass mine though, they can be temperamental.
-
It's all sounding very expensive Dan.... Might be worth trying to convince TheWife that it's time for a new bike!!
Suzuki, hint, hint!!

Just in case...

Both wrong models ECU's Pete, they are for the carb models, Dan's is injected.

Thanks for the input peeps. The question was aimed to provoke responses, to see if I missed anything. And you have all mentioned stuff I hadn't thought about. So Thanks again!!
David Silver I already use. But not thought of ringing them.
ECU has not been tested, This is why I am not convinced. The grease monkey wanted another £50 to test it.... hence I paid him off and requested my bike back. I can take the bloody ECU out to get it tested myself... ffs !!
The US versions do not use HISS, you are correct there Akey. But not entirelt sure if one will work on an HISS equipped bike??
Not at all happy with the service I have received from this guy. Essentially I feel I am back to square 1...
KJA, nope battery is/was perfectly fine. Reading well within normal range (13.5 -14.5 volts). Nope never leave the ignition on for any lenghth of time. All valid points though mate. As it happens, TheWifes cousin is coming down to rally on her 954, so I had already wondered about swapping the ECU's around....
Watch this space
I like you am not totally convinced this 'mechanic' was entirely honest with you Dan, I still say its nothing too serious, I have a mate who recently had something similar on a CBR600 and it turned out to be a bared wire earthing at certain revs causing the bike to cut out.
-
Its unusual for an ECU to go down, have you been running the bike with a weak battery? Do you leave the ignition on for any length of time without starting the bike? As Akey says I reckon a short is more likely. I think you need a second opinion, or is there anyone you know who has the same model as yours so you can try there ECU before you part with anymore money?

Pop along and say hello (kja.busa and I will be on the raffle !!!)
.. but can you make sure I dont get Kev!
Thankyou for that Munchkin!
Seriously this is a very worthy cause, if you out on bike why bnot call in and have a cold drink and get a couple of raffle tickets? They usually have some half decent raffle prizes especially if you like a tipple.

Get the exhaust sealed as best you can, make the bike look as tidy as possible, and get it sold mate, then put the money to another bike. The gsx550's weren't the most reliable bike ever, dodgy gearboxes too, and there were never that many of them around either. You'll find something newer for the right money.
-
Keep your standard exhaust can for when you decide to sell the bike, don't mess with it, buy one from ebay, either second hand or a cheap new one, theres plenty about.

Any news Dan?

Keep a look out on ebay for second hand stuff, also try ebay.com the American site, thats what I do and I get most of the stuff I'm after, it need not be a crisis. I know a guy who specialises in stainless fabrication and makes bike exhaust parts, I'll drop him a text tomorrow and see what he says, he may need your originals as a pattern though.

Hi,
I am looking to find the best bike repair centres throughout the UK, to be entered into a nationwide awards campaign. Big or small, it doesn't matter, its just about finding places which provide a top service.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Holly
Tbh, I can't think of any at this moment in time!

Thanks for input peeps!
Kill switch is fine. If only it were that simple!!
Sidestand switch is also fine.
Have checked an existing plug, no spark. I currently don't have a spare. But KJA? Yes I think the bin is the best place for it
Seriously, joking aside if you believe it to be the alram/immobiliser the bin is the best place for it, they are more trouble than they are worth, I nearly got stranded near Bordeaux once due to a Spyball alarm/immobiliser, but rest assured once I got home, it was "retired" to a safe place!
-
I'd start with the kill switch, then try a spare plug in a plug lead, earthed to the head to see if theres a spark. Most alarm immobilisers work best when removed from the bike and placed in the nearest dustbin.

All four coils wouldn't go down together, it does depend on how you tested them though, without being there its a tough call what to say. Do you know anyone with the same bike so you could swap components over to try and locate the fault?>
