softwarez Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Hi, im new to the forum and have a problem.. Maybe some one can help me.Basically, i want to change my brake pads. I get to the part of removing the Retaining Bolts (2 of them) but they wont budge and there is only one way for the pin to go in and out. But! It wont budge and theres hardly any tools i could possible use to get it out, any ideas? Thanks.P.S - The Bike is a suzuki gsx 750, and its the Rear Brakes Quote
cyberwolf Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 all you can do is soak it in wd40 for a week or 2 if that wont work you could be looking at getting new brakes i had the same problem with the breaks on the zzr i use to have i even had it in the garage and they couldn't get them out so i had to get new brakes Quote
softwarez Posted September 29, 2007 Author Posted September 29, 2007 Argh :/ I hope not. What tool should i use to at least try to remove them? and what technique etc? Thanks Quote
Guest Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Make sure you have removed the pin retaining pin, slots in a hole in the pin to stop it vibrating out Quote
softwarez Posted September 29, 2007 Author Posted September 29, 2007 Make sure you have removed the pin retaining pin, slots in a hole in the pin to stop it vibrating out Yeah, i have removed that pin. But the actual bolts are just stuck in there tight :/ Any ideas? I've put WD40 on them Quote
Guest Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Try using a drift,it will be a build up of rust holding the pins in a few gentle taps with a hammer and drift may move them, you say you have tried WD40 have you left it over night to soak in Quote
softwarez Posted September 29, 2007 Author Posted September 29, 2007 No i haven't left it over night. I will try again in the morning, hopefully it will work! Also, they are pins not bolts, yes. Quote
Stu Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 sometime you have to split the caliper to get the pins free steel and cast alloy dont go well together as others have said soak them in WD40 overnight try getting a nail that will fit into the holes where the split pins goes to try and turn the pin loose Quote
softwarez Posted September 29, 2007 Author Posted September 29, 2007 Yeah, tried to nail thing. The pin holes are so small that i need a small nail and it just bends lol. Also, you mentioned split the caliper, is this safe to do? I.E to brake fluid is getting channeld through it etc? Thanks Quote
Guest Posted September 30, 2007 Posted September 30, 2007 Whereabouts in England are you??You may be near someone who can give you a hand Quote
psycho Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 Try plus gas its the same sort of thing as wd40 but its made for the job of loosening tight bolts Quote
Guest Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 Agree with psycho, plus gas is the thing, halfords stock it.Get a pin punch from a tool shop to drive the retaining pins out. Quote
j_ase Posted October 7, 2007 Posted October 7, 2007 this may seem a bit daft but having just done my front pads the other day I noticed that if the pads arent sitting in the right place they push against the pin and it wont budge. Might be nothing but maybe if they arent sat flush it might be putting extra pressure on the pins Quote
Guest Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 the best way ive found to remove the pads is to either split the caliper or drill a small hole the other side of the pin and knock it out with a drift..... with the hole you only have to do it once and the next time you come to replacxe them the hole is allready there......ive done it on my old calipers and found it to be a good way......hope this helps......BM.
