I just had my bike in for an MOT, it failed due to the front brake discs.

The owner said that there were little rings on the brake disc which were all rusted and locked up. He mentioned I may be able to free them up by using a bolt and screw... any ideas what this is and how I can go about it ??? thanks.

Edit: These...

P.S - this is what it says on the red MOT slip:

centre front roller brake test indicates excessive fluctuation of brake effort

Remove your calliper and tie it out of the way, be careful not to operate the brake leaver whilst calliper is off, give the bobbins ( the round things) a good soaking over night in plus gas, then push and pull the rotor back and forward to free it, give it a good degreasing, paying special attention to the bobbins with contact cleaner, other wise your bakes will not work.

Cheers for the reply. I had to do it now so I couldn't really soak it.. but I did get an improvement, movement wise...

However, it still failed! :(.

I saw the machine he tested it with, it had values, in bold were ..50...100....150.... what value should the front brakes show on this machine? It seemed to read around 100 when held down hard.

Would new brakes fix this issue? the bloody discs are £100 a piece, the cheapest! :(

Thanks.

if you have got a bit of movement follow the instructions i gave but you don't have to soak overnight and you can use WD 40, and don't forget to degrease afterwards .

braking resistance depends on the weight of the bike so no actual figures just a percentage,

the discs will probably fit seeing as it's same make and model but i would Google it just to make sure

Thanks guys for the replies, I really do appreciate it :)

Note: I dont just come here for my problems.. I stalk the main forums, but dont post much more :D.

Eitherway, I have had to make a quick decision as my Bike is my main transport. I have a full set of discs and pads coming.. so I hope this resolves the issue.

Just one other little problem.. I have a bolt missing from my Mudguard.. must of vibrated out, and this is a fail! I dont have any spare bolts.. is there anywhere, where I could buy 'one'? lol!

Thanks so much guys! :)
