Guest Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 Hi, does anybody know of any mobile mechanics in the coventry area?My bike wont start after winter and nothing ive tried has worked. The carbs have been stripped and cleaned, fuel is reaching them and i have got a spark. I would appreciate any info or advice. Thanks, Matt Quote
Guest Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 Put a meter across the battery & turn it over. You should have around 14v if not the pulgs may not spark under load......................... Quote
fredc Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 You should have around 14v You wont get 14V until the engine is running Quote

Thanks, Matt are the plugs relatively new, and are you using choke ?put the battery on charge, then try again.. or you could bump start the bike in 2nd, this will tell you that the bike has all the components to run, and just requires investigation with the battery and or starter motor... caretaker Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 You should have around 14v You wont get 14V until the engine is running Oh yes you will!!! Now I'm puzzled- Where does it get the other 1.2V from?and if you put meter on - does the voltage increase even more than 14V once the bike is running? Quote
Roadtorque Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 did you leave fuel in it when you put it away & had it evaporated when you got it out ? ? ?, you say fuel is reaching the carb's but is it reaching the chambers ? when you try to start it & take a plug out is it wet ? ? if no, then it's the carb's, strip the carb's & check the jets & make sure they are clear, todays green fuel if it evaporates leaves a deposit that will block the hole in the jet, looks clean outside but the last bit of fuel dries out in the jet & looks like green glass, if you have a on/off tap on your tank & was switched off you could get the same result from the fuel in the cab's drying out Quote
Guest Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 The carbs have been cleaned out and shouldnt be blocked. As far as I know the fuel is reaching the float bowl but im not sure past that. I have put new spark plugs in and charged the battery. Tried to push start it too but it wont go. It just keeps turning over. Im new to working on bikes and its probably an easy fix but I think I need to get somebody who knows more than I do to have a look. Quote

Have you tried 1. seeing if the plug has a good strong regular spark whilst it is out of the engine (and earthed by holding against engine casing- using insulated pliers/screwdriver) as you turn engine over?2 Have you Set the plug gap3 checked the plug after you tried to start it -Is it (the plug) wet with fuel after you have tried to start it ? or is dry4Tried with choke no throttle? or Tried with throttle no choke? Guest Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 I bow to your superior knowledge of 12.8v batteries the 14v is because the bike is charging the battery whilst turned onits a 12v battery so should read 12volts! i had to check this a little while ago Quote
