Stu Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 fancy pulling the rear shock off mine for me so i can send it in for repair? i cant be arsed to do it its a right pain in the arse Quote
Susieque Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Just wondered if people are still interested in this. If enough interest in engine maintenance, I will bring my spare GSXR750 engine and do valve clearance and timing checks. Let me know what you want to learn or see and I will bring the tools. Don,t mind working on your bikes, but I,m disclaiming any responsibility if anything goes wrong. Not that I expect it to? I still think this is a damn good idea Megawatt - I know nothing about bike maintenance! We're bringing a 10ft square gazebo so that this can be done under cover in case of bad weather!!!! Quote
bigsisterbiker Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 brilliant idea megawatt. just seen this threadi'd be grateful for any help for my non-mechanical self thanks bud Quote

Don,t mind working on your bikes, but I,m disclaiming any responsibility if anything goes wrong. Not that I expect it to? Yes please :DHow about carburettor syncronisation? I'm really wanting to do it to my own bike (poor mpg, vibratey, etc - even got as far as buying myself a set of Morgan CarbTune 4!), but i'm scared i'll mess it up (first time and something always goes wrong when i try a job for the first time ) and consequently not be able to come to the rally. So was probably going to leave it. It certainly needs it, 2 years since it was last done, and it was restricted at that point! Quote
megawatt Posted July 11, 2011 Author Posted July 11, 2011 If you can bring em with ya, we can give it a go. Shock swaps are easy if we can support the frame/ swingarm spindle. I only have two axle stands and a 10mm spindle to support my bike? Quote
Stu Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Shock swaps are easy if we can support the frame/ swingarm spindle. I only have two axle stands and a 10mm spindle to support my bike? not easy on the TL swing arm off to remove the shock on mine!!the TL is a different setup the shock and spring is seperate easy to remove if you have the standard one which i err dont i installed it with great dificulty and snapped an engine bolt at the same time all fun and games i have to use an engine crane to support the bike Quote
megawatt Posted July 11, 2011 Author Posted July 11, 2011 Oh dear, haven t got an engine crane!!! Quote
littlecat Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 cant copy and paste the list as i have broken buttons.could do with soome help on the suspension front, what with me being a tiny shortase on a lowerd bike and all... and couold really do with tips on how the fck to get it on a paddock stand by myself lol, that will solve me a major problem Quote
megawatt Posted July 12, 2011 Author Posted July 12, 2011 Will be bringing my rear paddock stand, do you have bobbins LC? Can help you with suspension. Quote
littlecat Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 no bobbins, i use the flat thingys under the swingarm on mine, but cant physically lift her without help,im sure there must be a knack to it lol Quote
megawatt Posted July 12, 2011 Author Posted July 12, 2011 It,s just a question of positioning and leverage. We should be able to sort summat out. Can you post pix of your bike on stand and when it,s in position ready to lift.? I may be able to bring something with me that may help. Quote
Fozzie Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 I will pay attention on how to take apart suspension components... I want to see how its properly done as opposed to my methods, which are self taught. Quote
megawatt Posted July 12, 2011 Author Posted July 12, 2011 Mine are self taught too mate and I ain't saying they,re the best, just my way. If anyone wants any work doing at the rally, bring the parts, borrow my tools and I will advise .We can all learn at the Same time!!! Ideally , we can check someone,s valve clearances at the rally and I won,t have to lug this bloody engine around!!! Quote
Ingah Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Mine needs checking (was last checked over 2 years ago so its a couple of months overdue). It's only a parallel twin, but that'll make it easier if anything. This is assuming it gets me there of course. (It's famous for being unreliable) Quote
Tango Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 You guys have never met me! I can talk bikes for England. If you have anymore subjects to talk/ask about can you please copy and paste it to this list. Also hoping I can get some help from other experience bikers. I don't profess to know everything!!! tension chain and check alignment, clean and lubricate chainchange and check engine oiladjust, replace cablestighten bolts without stripping threadsremove and replace brake padscarry out electrical fault findingcarry out fork oil replacementset up suspension to suit youfitting lowering links and setting upcheck and adjust valve clearancesbalance carbs How about checking and adjusting Head bearings and checking wheel bearings?Topping up Coolant and burping the system to get rid of any air.Greasing suspension linkages and checking for playI think you're gonna have your work cut out here mate. I'll lend a hand if I can...but we won't be arriving until late morning Saturday.Cheers,Bob Quote
Susieque Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 I've got my sidestand fitted, but no safety cut-out Quote
Jixerman Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Top Man Megawatt And no, before anyone suggests, my bike doesn't need a respray of streetfightering.... How about rebranding?............on second thoughts maybe not Quote
Boothy Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 And no, before anyone suggests, my bike doesn't need a respray of streetfightering.... Why you planning on streetfightering it on the way to the rally? Quote
megawatt Posted July 13, 2011 Author Posted July 13, 2011 Just been sorting my tools for the rally and I can,t find my feeler gauges. Ingah Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 As i just mentioned in the other thread, am hoping to bring my Morgan CarbTune 4. Will also try to remember to bring my feeler gauges, but suggest someone else does too because it's the sort of thing i'll forget. Quote
megawatt Posted July 14, 2011 Author Posted July 14, 2011 (edited) Will try to get some on the way , bit don,t know a good shop in the area. Good man Ingah. Edited July 14, 2011 by megawatt Quote
Guest Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Will try and remember feeler gauges, but there at the 'rents and not likely to go there before we come! If I do, I'll bring em!If you need to demostrate coolant top up! You can use mine! Quote
whitedevil Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 I have a few sets of feeler gauges i can bring, one is an angled set too which might be handy. My throttle bodies could do with being balanced as it hasn't been done since before my clearances were done. I just haven't been able to afford some gauges yet. Could also check my air filter while its accessible. Quote
